Secondary explosions reported after Tiger planes hit Palaali

Two attack aircraft of the Liberation Tigers bombed the Sri Lankan military’s main base complex in the Jaffna peninsula in the early hours of Tuesday morning, inflicting heavy damage and casualties, LTTE military spokesman Irasiah Ilanthirayan told TamilNet. Both planes returned safely to base, he said. Meanwhile sources said continuous explosions were heard from inside the High Security Zone for five hours after the air raid, fuelling speculation that a major ammunition dump had been hit.

The two Tamileealm Air Force (TAF) aircraft struck at 1.20 am and returned to their base in LTTE controlled Vanni, Mr. Ilanthirayan told TamilNet.

The air attack inflicted severe casualties amongst Sri Lankan security forces personnel at the base complex, Mr. Ilanthirayan added.

Power supply was shut down for more than 3 hours in Jaffna after the air raid, civilian sources said.

Cellphone links to the northern peninsula was also cut off following the air attack.

According to sources in Jaffna, clashes were also reported along the forward defence lines separating LTTE and government-controlled parts of the Jaffna peninsula.

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) artillery based in Palali fired artillery shells towards LTTE controlled territory, continuing a bombardment that has been ongoing for several days.

The air strike on the Palali base complex, the second claimed by the Tigers, comes a month after the two TAF planes attacked the military airbase at Katunayake causing severe damage to the Sri Lankan Air Force’s primary installation in the island.

Sri Lanka rebels say bombed air base

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Two Tamil Tiger aircraft bombed a Sri Lankan military air base in the north of the country early on Tuesday, the second strike of its kind by the rebels, the group said.

The military denied that the air raid happened.

"Tamil Tigers air wing attacked Palaali airstrip and military storage," rebel military spokesman Ilanthirayan said by telephone. "Our aircraft returned safely."

He said the planes dropped eight bombs on the Jaffna peninsula, although the extent of the destruction was unknown. The pro-Tiger Web site Tamilnet reported the attack inflicted "heavy damage" to a military garrison. "Nothing like that happened," air force spokesman Group Captain Ajantha de Silva said.

A spokesman for the Media Centre for National Security said: "We totally deny the air strike, but there were some artillery rounds fired ... They also did not cause any damage".

Nearly a month ago Tamil Tiger light aircraft flew undetected from rebel-held territory in the north of the island to the capital on the southwestern coast and bombed an air base next to the international airport.

Analysts say the Tigers' mini-air force consists of just two to five light, propeller planes built by pieces smuggled in over time, but are a threat the military would be ill-advised to underestimate.

The rebels, known officially as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or LTTE, have been fighting for decades for an independent homeland on the north and east of the teardrop-shaped island in the Indian Ocean.

Since 1983 the war in Sri Lanka has killed some 68,000 people, including more than 4,000 in the past 16 months as violence has intensified and left a 2002 ceasefire agreement in tatters.

The government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa has vowed to destroy the Tigers, while the rebels have warned of a "bloodbath" if the international community fails to stop daily military attacks.

கடந்த மாதம் 26 ஆம் நாள் தமிழீழ வான்படையினர் சிறிலங்கா கட்டுநாயக்க வான்படைத் தளத்தின் மீது நடத்திய தாக்குதலின் பின்னர் சிறிலங்காவின் வான்படையினர் வான்புலிகளின் தளங்கள், வான்புலிகளின் இலக்குகள், விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் இலக்குகள் எனக்கூறிக்கொண்டு 150-க்கும் அதிகமான தடவைகள் குண்டுத்தாக்குதல்களை நடத்தியிருந்தனர்.

தமிழீழ வான்படையினர் இன்று அதிகாலை நடத்திய தாக்குதலின் மூலம் மீண்டும் தமது வலிமையை நிரூபித்துள்ளனர் என்பது இங்கு குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

விடுதலைப்புலிகளின் வான்தாக்குதலை சிறீலங்கா இராணுவம் மறுத்தது

இன்று செவ்வாய்கிழமை விடுதலைப்புலிகள் பலாலி படைத்தளம் மீது தாக்குதல் நடாத்தியதை சிறீலங்கா இராணுவத்தின் வான்படைப் பேச்சாளர் கப்டன் அஜந்த டி சில்வா மறுத்துள்ளார்.

அவர் மேலும் தெரிவிக்கையில் அவ்வாறு எதுவும் நடக்கவில்லை எனவும் பூநகரிப் பகுதியில் இருந்து சில எறிகணைத்தாக்குதல்கள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டதாகவும் அவை தமக்கு எதுவித சேதத்தையும் ஏற்படுத்தவில்லை எனவும் தெரிவித்திருந்தார்.

Sri Lanka's Tamil Tigers bomb air base in north

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Tamil Tiger aircraft bombed a Sri Lankan military air base in the north of the country early on Tuesday, the second such strike by the rebel group.

"Tamil Tigers air wing attacked Palaali airstrip and military storage," rebel military spokesman Ilanthirayan said by telephone. "Our aircraft returned safely."

He said the extent of the damage was unknown, but the pro-Tiger Web site Tamilnet reported the attack inflicted "heavy damage" to a military garrison.

A government military spokesman could not be reached for a comment.

The attack on Tuesday came nearly a month after Tamil Tiger light aircraft flew undetected from rebel-held territory in the north of the island to the capital on the southwestern coast and bombed an air base next to the international airport.

Analysts say the Tigers' mini-air force consists of just two to five light, propeller planes built by pieces smuggled in over time, but are a threat the military would be ill-advised to underestimate.

The rebels, known officially as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or LTTE, have been fighting for decades for an independent homeland on the north and east of the teardrop-shaped island in the Indian Ocean.

Since 1983 the war in Sri Lanka has killed some 68,000 people, including more than 4,000 in the past 16 months as violence has intensified and left a 2002 ceasefire agreement in tatters.

The government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa has vowed to destroy the Tigers, while the rebels have warned of a "bloodbath" if the international community fails to stop daily military attacks.

Two "Tamil Eelam Air Force (planes) have bombed Palaly military base inflicting heavy damage," Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) military spokesman Irasiah Ilanthiriyan told the pro-LTTE Web site Tamilnet.

Military sources disputed the damage at Palaly, saying the bombs fell on Myliddy.

It was the second air attack by Tamil Tiger rebels in a month.

On March 26 two aircraft dropped bombs at the Sri Lanka Air Force's main base in Katunayake, adjoining the Colombo International Airport. The attack killed three and wounded 16 airmen.

The Sri Lanka Air Force denied the statement of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE) that the Tamil Tiger air planes bombed the Palali air strip by using their propeller driven two fixed winged air craft and called it a complete fabrication.

But military sources said by artillery fire six soldiers died at Myladdi , away from Palali air strip.

Military officials said that SL security forces were successful in repulsing an LTTE attempt to breach the High Security Air Zone in Palali. The security forces acted promptly, alerted through the air defence systems, and launched a counter air offensive at a suspected aircraft, detected in the skies off Tondamannar, forcing it to change course immediately. Observation units in the Point Pedro area confirmed that the fleeing aircraft had dropped two bombs in the Myladdi area. Unable to make-through the anti-air gunfire support from the SL security forces, the suspected aircraft had immediately altered course and headed to the un-liberated Mullattivu area.

Meanwhile, military officials in Jaffna said that LTTE terrorists launched a series of artillery fire towards the Palali general area from Pooneryn in the un-cleared Killinochchi district following the unsuccessful air attack. According to the Jaffna military officials, the LTTE artillery mounts were silenced in successive retaliatory heavy gunfire from the security forces. No damages were caused to the Palali military base, the officials further added.

According to civilian sources, tension has mounted in the Tellippalai area as LTTE launched artillery shells fell well within the civilian settlements, forcing the majority Tamil community to take shelter under the protection of the security forces. Military officials said that the damages caused to civilian lives and property were not yet accessed due to the LTTE artillery attack.

The exposed bogus reporting is another incident of the LTTE misleading the world community; an effort of the LTTE to gain undue propaganda mileage to their terrorist activities.

The discrepancies in the reporting of Pro-LTTE websites have become a phenomenal error in their cause of mediation.

This type of "Untruth", is resorted to win the confidence of people else where in the world.

These people are really a big liers. I laughed when I read this news. They don't even have a logic in their news. First they try to hide it by saying it was an artillery attack. But the news started to leak thru the jaffna residents. Then SLAF trying to hide it by saying that these bombs were dropped somewhere close to Palaly. I think if we wait some more time, they will say, yes we got damages in the Palaly camp, so what? The government is really stupid in hiding news. I think SL government will rank number one in the stupidest government in the world.
