இலங்கை ஜனாதிபதி மஹிந்த ராஜபக்ஷ அவர்கள் ஆக்ஸ்போர்டில் வியாழக்கிழமை ஆற்ற இருந்த சிறப்பு உரை ரத்துச் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளதாக ஆக்ஸ்போர்ட் யூனியன் அமைப்பு அறிவித்துள்ளது.

இது குறித்து அந்த அமைப்பு தனது இணையத் தளத்தில் ஒரு அறிவித்தலை வெளியிட்டிருந்தது.

இந்த உரையை ஆற்றுவதற்காக இலங்கை ஜனாதிபதி பிரிட்டனுக்கு வந்ததை பிரிட்டனில் வாழும் தமிழர்கள் வன்மையாக கண்டித்து விமான நிலையத்தில் ஒரு ஆர்ப்பாட்டத்தையும் நடத்தியிருந்தார்கள்.

நாளை அவர் உரையாற்றவிருந்த மன்றத்தின் முன்பாகவும் ஆர்ப்பாட்டம் நடத்த தமிழ் அமைப்புக்கள் சிலவற்றால் அழைப்பு விடுக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது. இந்த நிலையிலேயே அந்த உரை நிகழ்வு தவிர்க்க முடியாத காரணங்களால் ரத்துச் செய்யப்படுவதாக தற்போது அறிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

பாதுகாப்புக் காரணங்களுக்காகவே அந்த உரை ரத்துச் செய்யப்பட்டதாக அந்த அமைப்பு அறிவித்துள்ளது. இந்த ரத்து காரண்மாக தாம் வருத்தமடைவதாகவும் அந்த அமைப்பு கூறியுள்ளது.

நடக்கக்கூடிய ஆர்ப்பாட்டங்களின் அளவு பெரிதாக இருக்கும் என்று எதிர்பார்க்கப்படுவதால், இந்த உரை பாதுகாப்பாக நடக்கும் என்று தாம் கருதவில்லை என்றும் அந்த அமைப்பு கூறியுள்ளது.

Due to security concerns surrounding President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s visit which have recently been brought to our attention by the police, the Union has regretfully found that the talk is no longer practicable and has had to cancel his address, states a media release from the Oxford Union.

Statement from The Oxford Union on the visit of President Rajapaksa, December 2nd 2010

Earlier this year, The Oxford Union invited the current President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa, to address our members at a date convenient to him. The Union has a policy of inviting a broad range of prominent politicians and heads of state from around the world and the invitation to Mr. Rajapaksa was made within the context of this policy.

Since the invitation was first accepted by Mr. Rajapaksa, the Union has consulted extensively with Thames Valley Police as well as the Sri Lankan High Commission in London on security arrangements for the President’s visit. Due to security concerns surrounding Mr. Rajapaksa’s visit which have recently been brought to our attention by the police, the Union has regretfully found that the talk is no longer practicable and has had to cancel his address.

This decision was not taken lightly and the Union deeply regrets the cancellation. The Union has a long tradition of hosting prominent speakers and upholding the principles of free speech. However, due to the sheer scale of the expected protests, we do not feel that the talk can reasonably and safely go ahead as planned.

The Union holds a politically neutral stance with regards to speakers and the decision was not made in relation to any aspect of Mr. Rajapaksa’s political position, the policies of his administration or any allegations against his government. As the President of Sri Lanka for the last five years, the Union felt that Mr. Rajapaksa would provide a unique insight into the political climate of the region in his speech. The Union wishes to apologise to our members for this unfortunate cancellation.

Channel 4 News uncovers a WikiLeaks cable which appears to show the United States believes responsibility for alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka rests with its leaders, including President Rajapakse.

The cable, released today by whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks, and unearthed by Channel 4 News, was sent from the US Embassy in Colombo on 15 January this year and is headed: "Sri Lanka war crimes accountability: the Tamil perspective".

In it, Ambassador Patricia Butenis tackles what the cable describes as "the most difficult issue", of who in Sri Lanka is accountable for war crimes allegedly committed over the country's 26-year civil war, particularly towards the last few months of the conflict.

The WikiLeaks website has been under sustained cyber attack for most of today, but in a short break Channel 4 News was able to obtain the Sri Lanka cable.

Ms Butenis writes in the communication that it is "unsurprising" that Sri Lanka's government has not investigated the issue, noting "there are no examples we know of a regime undertaking wholesale investigations of its own troops or senior officials for war crimes while that regime or government remained in power."

Responsibility for many of the alleged crimes rests with the country's senior civilian and military leadership, including President Rajapakse.

மகிந்த பேசாவிட்டாலும் போராட்டம் நடைபெறும்: BTF அறிவிப்பு

மகிந்த ஆக்ஸ்ஃபேட் பல்கலைக் கழகத்க்தில் பேசாவிட்டாலும் அவர் தங்கியுள்ள விடுதி முன்பு போராட்டம் நடைபெறும்.

நாளை திட்டமிட்ட வகையில் போராட்டம் நடைபெறும் என பிரித்தானிய தமிழர் பேரவையும், மற்றைய தமிழ் அமைப்புகளும் தெரிவித்துள்ளது. நாளை ஆக்ஸ்ஃபேட் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் மகிந்த ஆற்ற இருந்த உரை ரத்துச்செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது என்று உத்தியோகபூர்வ செய்திகள் வெளியாகியிருந்தது.

இருப்பினும் அவர் தங்கியுள்ள டோச்சஸ்டர் விடுதிக்கும் முன்பாக இப் போராட்டம் திட்டமிட்ட வையில் நடைபெறும் என தமிழ் அமைபுகள் தெரிவித்துள்ளது. மகிந்த இலங்கைக்கு திரும்பிவிட்டதாகவும் இதனால் போராட்டங்கள் தேவையில்லை எனவும் சிலர் பரப்புரைகளை மேற்கொண்டு வருகின்றனர்.

ஆனால் பிரான்ஸ், சுவிஸ், மற்றும் இதர நாடுகளில் இருந்து பஸ் மற்றும் கார்களில் பல தமிழர் பிரித்தானியா நோக்கிவந்துகொண்டு இருக்கின்றனர். அத்தோடு மகிந்த இன்னும் பிரித்தானியாவில் தங்கியிருப்பதாக ஊர்ஜிதமான செய்திகள் கிடைத்துள்ளதோடு, அவர் விடுதிக்கும் பொலிஸ் பாதுகாப்பும் இன்னும் கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

எனவே பொய்யான பரப்புரைகளை நம்பாது, மக்கள் நாளை போராட்டத்தில் பெரும்தொகையாகக் கலந்துகொள்ளவேண்டும் எனக் கேட்டுகொள்கின்றனர் ஏற்பாட்டாளர்கள். டோச்சஸ்டர் விடுதிக்கு முன்னர் ஆர்ப்பாட்டம் நடத்த தேவையான அனுமதியைப் பெறும் முயற்ச்சியில் தற்போது தமிழ் அமைபுகள் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளதால் இன்னும் சில மணித்தியாலங்களில் சட்டச் சிக்கல் தீர்ந்துவிடும்.

எனவே நாளை திட்டமிட்டபடி போராட்டம் நடக்கும் என்பதை மக்கள் நன்கு புரிந்துகொள்வர் என்பதில் ஐயமில்லை. பிரித்தானிய தமிழர்களின் பாரிய போராட்டத்தால் இவ்வெற்றி கிட்டியுள்ளது என்பது அனைவரும் அறிந்த விடையம்.
