Verona deaf school ex-pupils tell Italian TV of sex abuse by priests

The sex abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic Church came to the Pope’s doorstep last night as a group of victims appeared on Italian television to claim that two dozen priests had for decades abused children at a school for the deaf in Verona.

Three former pupils of the Antonio Provolo school who spoke on RAI, the state broadcaster, confirmed allegations made in a signed statement last year by 67 ex-pupils who described a regime of sexual abuse, paedophilia and corporal punishment from the 1950s to the 1980s. They said that 24 priests and lay brothers from the Company of Mary order were involved.

The three said that the priests had “fondled and masturbated” them as well as sodomising them in dormitories, bathrooms and the priests’ quarters.

Among the accused is Monsignor Giuseppe Carraro, Bishop of Verona from 1958-78, who died in 1981 and whom the local diocese has sought to have beatified, a crucial step on the road to sainthood.

Gianni Bisoli, 62, one of the victims, told viewers he had attended the school from the ages of nine to fifteen and had first been “the object of sexual attentions” three months after he arrived.

“I was sodomised and forced to have oral sex and masturbated by friars and lay brothers” he said, naming 14 of them. “From the age of 11 to 13, I was accompanied on several occasions to the apartments of the bishop of Verona, where the bishop himself sodomised me and made me have other kinds of sexual relations”.

Alessandro Vantini, 60, another victim at the school, who earlier said: “You couldn’t tell your parents because the priests would beat you”, told the programme he was at the school from the ages of 6 to 19. He said until he was ten he was “repeatedly sodomised” by two priests and two lay brothers. “This violence took place in the bathrooms and bedrooms and sometimes in the school church.”

Dario Laiti, 60, told viewers he had been molested at the Verona school and at a summer camp for deaf mutes. All three — speaking with difficulty — said they “wanted justice”.

The present Bishop of Verona, Mgr Giuseppe Zenti, initially accused the former pupils of “hallucinating”. However, the diocese had to open an inquiry after one of the accused lay brothers admitted sexual relations with pupils. Last summer the diocese forwarded its files on the abuse to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which took no action until last month when Cardinal William Levada, Pope Benedict’s successor as head of the congregation, agreed it was “opportune to proceed” with an inquiry.

Bruno Fasani, spokesman for the Verona Diocese, said it had not taken action earlier because it had not known how to contact the victims. Marco Lodi Rizzini, spokesman for the victims, dismissed this, saying he had personally spoken to Bishop Zenti twice about the accusations and sent him details.

The case echoes one in America in which the Pope has been accused of failing to act against a priest who molested 200 boys at a school for the deaf in Wisconsin. The New York Times this week revealed that a church prosecution of Father Lawrence Murphy for sex offences between 1950 to 1974 was halted after he appealed to Benedict, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the office charged with disciplining clergy.

The Italian Bishops Conference said yesterday it was forming a “task force” to collect evidence of paedophilia.

Corriere della Sera said that the tide of allegations in the US and Europe had finally “reached [Pope Benedict's] window above St Peter’s Square [with] destructive force”. The best response was not to “withdraw into the fortress and shout about plots” but to hide nothing, the newspaper said.

The Church’s account of what Benedict had known about a paedophile priest in Germany was called into question yesterday. Father Peter Hullermann was given sanctuary in 1980 in the Munich Diocese for “therapy” after molesting a boy. A memo, the existence of which was confirmed by two German church officials, showed that Benedict — then Cardinal Ratzinger and Archbishop of Munich — not only led a meeting on January 15, 1980, approving the transfer of the priest from Essen, but that he was also kept informed of the priest’s subsequent reassignment.

It remains unclear whether he played any part in the decisions or whether he had read the memo addressed to him. Father Hullermann was convicted of sexual abuse in 1986. Now 61, he was suspended this month from his post in the Bavarian town of Bad Tölz for breaking a promise not to have contact with children and young people.

The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has received information that a primary school teacher Ven Harankahawe Chandrawimala (Buddhist monk) has allegedly harassed children physically and mentally including in sexual ways, and consistently denied their religious freedom for last two years.

According to our source who followed up the case, child abuse by Ven Harankahawe Chandrawimala is explained in 20 odd ways. Also, it is reported that he had been transferred from the previous school in Monarangala Vidiyalaya for charges on child abuse. More seriously, it is alleged that Ven Harankahawe Chandrawimala assaulted the two his fellow teachers physically and mentally several times. One of the two teachers made a complaint to the police station but there has been no serious action taken by the police yet. Even though parents of the children have made several written and oral complaints to the principal, nothing happened to correct this matter. Now the children's parents fear that their children would soon become victims of rape or torture if this matter is not settled immediately.

Pope: I 'will not be intimidated' by sex abuse accusations

A defiant Pope Benedict XVI indicated yesterday that he would not be intimidated by the clerical sex abuse crisis now engulfing the Church and threatening to undermine his authority.

Speaking during Palm Sunday Mass, he said that faith in Christ “helps lead us towards courage which does not allow us to be intimidated by the chatter of dominant opinions”.

He also said that Man can sometimes “fall to the lowest, vulgar levels” and “sink into the swamp of sin and dishonesty”. The pontiff did not refer directly to accusations over his handling of cases of paedophile priests, both as Archbishop of Munich from 1977 to 1982 and subsequently as head of doctrine at the Vatican. However, Vatican watchers said that his meaning was clear “in the current context”.

Father Federico Lombardi, the Pope’s spokesman, insisted that Pope Benedict had not been weakened by the allegations, which have led some to demand his resignation five years after he was elected. Popes are elected for life. The last pontiff to step down voluntarily was Pope Celestine V in 1294, who became a hermit.

Father Lombardi said: “The recent media attacks have without doubt caused damage. But the authority of the Pope and the commitment of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith against sex abuse of minors will come out of this not weakened but strengthened.”

The Archbishop of Westminster, the Most Rev Vincent Nichols, defended the Pope, saying that he was at the forefront of efforts to tackle the problem of clerical sex abuse. The archbishop told The Andrew Marr Show on BBC One: “The Pope will not resign. Frankly there is no strong reason for him to do so. In fact, it is the other way around. He is the one above all else in Rome that has tackled this thing head on.”

Protesters gathered outside Westminster Cathedral in London yesterday to demand the Pope’s resignation over clerical sex abuse. Last week the pontiff apologised to victims of child sex abuse in Ireland, writing in a letter that they had “suffered grievously”.

Archbishop Nichols was speaking after more details emerged in Ireland of legal cases in which the head of the Irish Catholic Church, Cardinal Sean Brady, is named as a defendant. The Sunday Independent reported yesterday that the cardinal is fighting legal actions brought by five victims of the child rapist Father Brendan Smyth.

An investigation will be held in Ireland into whether offences were committed by failures to report allegations to the police or to take steps to stop priests raping children. The Times reported on Saturday that Cardinal Brady is under pressure to resign and is using Lent to consider his position. He has said that he will make up his mind by Pentecost, at the end of May.

Responding to the reports that Cardinal Brady was present when abused children were sworn to secrecy, Archbishop Nichols said that it was wrong for victims to swear secrecy for a lifetime but added: “It is like giving victims anonymity in the course of a trial.”

Cardinal Brady revealed yesterday that a parish priest in Northern Ireland has taken leave over child safety issues. The cardinal said in a message posted on the Armagh diocese website that the move was to allow the civil authorities to investigate.

Vatican officials maintain that the Pope has been active in combating clerical sex abuse, especially during his visit to the US in 2008 when he met several victims. However, the Vatican is bracing itself for further revelations. The American Vatican watcher John Allen, of the National Catholic Reporter, said that the Munich diocese should release all its records of its dealings with paedophile priests rather than wait for the media to bring them to light.

It has already emerged that as Cardinal Ratzinger, the Pope allowed Father Peter Hullermann, a known paedophile priest, to receive “therapy” in his Munich diocese in 1980. Father Hullermann was allowed to resume pastoral work with children later, and in 1986 was convicted of abusing minors. “You can bet the farm that journalists, victims’ advocates and lawyers are feverishly searching right now for other such cases,” Mr Allen said.

Last week The New York Times highlighted a case in which the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith told Wisconsin bishops to halt a church trial for Father Lawrence Murphy, a priest alleged to have abused up to 200 deaf boys at a time when Cardinal Ratzinger was head of the Congregation.

The Vatican insists that the future Pope was unaware of Father Hullermann’s return to pastoral work and has also defended his handling of the Wisconsin case, saying that Father Murphy was in ill health and the accusations against him dated back decades. He died not long after the Church trial against him was dropped

Worshippers revolt in church as German Catholic leaders admit abuse

Archbishop Robert Zollitsch said that the Church had committed serious mistakes and done too little to help the victims of abuse

German Catholic leaders openly admitted for the first time today that the Church betrayed and abused children in its care.

The admission by Archbishop Robert Zollitsch, chairman of the German Bishops' Conference, came as Catholic priests across the country called on their congregations to pray for abused children.

But in many churches worshippers took the unusual step of expressing their unhappiness with the Church's management of the crisis.

Archbishop Zollitsch said that the Church had committed serious mistakes and done too little to help the victims of priestly abuse. “The caring responsibility towards the victims was insufficient in the past because of our own disappointment at the painful failure of the perpetrators, and out of a falsely understood concern for the standing of the church," he said

It was as close as the Church in Germany has come to admitting that it covered up crimes committed by priests.

That, he said, was the "painful reality that we have to face up to". The Archbishop's words were notably blunter than those used by the Pope the previous day.

On Maundy Thursday he did not refer directly to the child abuse revelations now spreading across continents and confined himself to calling on Christians to respect the law.

Archbishop Zollitsch has already had to apologise for not turning over a paedophile priest in his diocese to the state prosecutor.

On Thursday France became the latest European country to implicate paedophile priests, one accused of assaulting a boy in 1992 and 1993 and another of possessing pornographic images of minors.

At the Jesuit-run Saint Canesius church in Berlin, worshippers at the Good Friday High Mass were asked to pray for Pope Benedict and the bishops of the church.

The priest appealed: "Let us pray for the children who have been done great injustice within the church community, who were abused and damaged in body and soul and for those who have sinned against children and others in their care." Half of the congregation, perhaps 150 people, remained silently standing in a rare flash of defiance. Similar scenes were reported from across the country.

More than 20 out of 27 dioceses had agreed to integrate the prayers into the service. The formula — openly acknowledging the victimhood of the children molested by priests — had been worked out by Stephan Ackermann, Bishop of Trier, the Church's expert on abuse. Last week he introduced a hotline for victims and found that 20 of the callers claimed to have been abused in his own diocese.

"No, the prayer for the children wasn't a surprise," said one of the Berlin worshippers. “It was relief. But did you notice there were only three families in the congregation? That was unusual here. But, at the moment, churches are not places you take children." The victim hotline, belatedly set up, was a defensive move, the act of a church at bay. Non-Catholic organisations are already operating dedicated phonelines and encouraging victims to step forward, name names, and make claims for financial compensation. The abuse victims — well over 300 in Germany — are starting to mobilise and to lose their fear of public embarrassment.

"We are learning daily about the methods of education in Catholic institutions in Austria in the 1960s and 1970s," said Holger Eich, working a hotline for the Austrian group Platform for Victims of Violence by the Church. About 174 cases have come forward in the past fortnight.

"These methods can be summed up in one word — sadism," Dr Eich added.

Public opinion in the German-speaking Catholic world has rarely been so nakedly hostile to the Church. The German and Austrian Church leaderships thus decided that they should use Easter to apologise and admit mistakes rather than wait for a declaration from the Pope.

Archbishop Zollitsch told of the Church's "mourning, outrage and shame . . . wounds have been ripped open that can no longer be healed".

The new candour of the Church could, the Archbishop said, mark a new beginning. "That is something that we all so desperately need."

John Allen, the Vatican commentator, said yesterday that the crisis had taken an enormous financial toll. The current estimate is that dioceses, religious orders, and other Catholic institutions in America have paid $2.5 billion (£1.6 billion) in settlements, with perhaps another $1 billion on the table in pending lawsuits. Seven dioceses and a religious order have declared bankruptcy.

Mr Allen wrote on the Washington Post website: "This crisis has taken a terrible toll on the Catholic Church and I suspect it's far from over. While the crisis has erupted in the United States and parts of Europe, it really hasn't yet reached the southern hemisphere ... Latin America, Africa and Asia . . . where two thirds of the 1.1 billion Catholics today live.”

நான் சைவசமயத்தவனாகவிருந்தாலும் அன்னை மேரியையும் யேசுவையும் வழிபடுபவன். அனைத்து மதங்களும் மனிதர்களை நல்வழிப்படுத்தி இறைவனை அடைவதற்காகவே என்பதை உணர்ந்தவன். காலத்துக்கு காலம் அந்த மதங்களில் செல்வாக்கு செலுத்துபவர்களால் ஒரு சில நம்பிக்கைகள் வழிமுறைகள் ஏற்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன. அவை பிற்போக்குத்தனமானதாகவோ மூட நம்பிக்கைகளாகவோ இருக்கும்பட்சத்தில் அவற்றை விமர்சிக்க வேண்டுமே தவிர அந்த மதத்தையல்ல.

ஆனால் இங்கே ஒரு சிலரது நடவடிக்கைகளுக்காக இந்துமதத்தையே அழுக்குகள் நிறைந்ததாக காட்டியும் தமது மதத்தில் அவ்வாறானவை இல்லையென்ற ரீதியிலும் கருத்துக்களை வைக்கின்றனர். நாம் பெரியாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் ஒருவரை பரதேசி பொறுக்கி என தரக்குறைவான விமர்சனம் செய்கின்றனர்.ஆனால் அதையே நானும் மாறி செய்தால் நான் மதங்களுக்கிடையில் சண்டை மூட்டுபவன் அநாகரிகமாக கருத்தெழுதுபவனாக யாழ்க்களம் எனக்கு எச்சரிக்கை வழங்குகின்றது.

நான் சைவசமயத்தவனாகவிருந்தாலும் அன்னை மேரியையும் யேசுவையும் வழிபடுபவன். அனைத்து மதங்களும் மனிதர்களை நல்வழிப்படுத்தி இறைவனை அடைவதற்காகவே என்பதை உணர்ந்தவன். காலத்துக்கு காலம் அந்த மதங்களில் செல்வாக்கு செலுத்துபவர்களால் ஒரு சில நம்பிக்கைகள் வழிமுறைகள் ஏற்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன. அவை பிற்போக்குத்தனமானதாகவோ மூட நம்பிக்கைகளாகவோ இருக்கும்பட்சத்தில் அவற்றை விமர்சிக்க வேண்டுமே தவிர அந்த மதத்தையல்ல.

ஆனால் இங்கே ஒரு சிலரது நடவடிக்கைகளுக்காக இந்துமதத்தையே அழுக்குகள் நிறைந்ததாக காட்டியும் தமது மதத்தில் அவ்வாறானவை இல்லையென்ற ரீதியிலும் கருத்துக்களை வைக்கின்றனர். நாம் பெரியாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் ஒருவரை பரதேசி பொறுக்கி என தரக்குறைவான விமர்சனம் செய்கின்றனர்.ஆனால் அதையே நானும் மாறி செய்தால் நான் மதங்களுக்கிடையில் சண்டை மூட்டுபவன் அநாகரிகமாக கருத்தெழுதுபவனாக யாழ்க்களம் எனக்கு எச்சரிக்கை வழங்குகின்றது.

எமது மத மற்றும் பெரியார்களை தரக்குறைவாக விமர்சனம் செய்யும் போது அதனை இக்களம் அனுமதித்தது ஏன் என புரியவில்லை.
