Inside Thiru Thiruchelvam's house, the lights have been turned off.

Through his windows, he sees a mob approaching, sticks, knives and clubs in their arms.

Thiruchelvam, a journalist, his wife and son are among the few Tamils on this street in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and they know the end might be near.

Thiruchelvam tells his wife and 13-year-old son to hide under the bed, then he squeezes between the wall and the fridge, hoping the cover of darkness will save him.

A few seconds later, wood splinters and glass shatters. An hour later, flames fill the home.

It's July 24, 1983, one of the most violent days of Black July — though no one called it that at the time. That will come with the days and years that follow, after hundreds of Sri Lankan Tamils have been killed and more than 17,000 homes burned and looted. The attacks were in retaliation for the death of a dozen Sri Lankan government soldiers.

"Even though 23 years have passed, it's still a nightmare," said Thiruchelvam, who escaped with his family with only the clothes on their backs. Their home was burned beyond recognition, his life savings, his prized book collection and family photographs all gone.

For many Tamil Canadians like Thiruchelvam, Black July is a time that still haunts them. The violence they saw convinced thousands they were no longer safe in their homes and made them start thinking about migrating overseas.

It was also an experience that deepened these survivors' attachment to this country and many of them will gather from 6 to 9 tonight at Dundas Square to remember those days, filled with so much turmoil and pain, and to express their gratitude to Canada for opening its doors and providing them with a home.

"It's great what Canada did," Thiruchelvam said. "It was one of the first countries to open its doors to Tamil refugees."

It's a sentiment that former Catholic priest Anton Philip shares. When he talks about Canada, his voice is almost reverential. "They gave refuge to thousands of us."

Philip was a political prisoner, later found innocent, in Sri Lanka during Black July. Dozens of Tamils were tortured and killed in prison, he recalls.

"We could hear their cries," he said. "That part of the world, they don't treat you like a human being sometimes.

"Scary is not a word to describe what we went through," he said. "That period for us was life or death."

Former Sri Lankan police officer Kandiah Thevarajah was on his regular shift at a Colombo bank when he started hearing stories of unrest and attacks on Tamils.

The chairman, a Sinhalese man, was sympathetic to the plight of his employees and hid them for a few days.

But soon he realized he couldn't keep the men safe any more. So he told them to take a company jeep and flee to a refugee camp.

"As we drove, we would see lots of people with crowbars, clubs and knives, stopping cars at each and every checkpoint," Thevarajah said.

"I told the driver — don't stop, just keep going.

"The whole time we are scared," said Thevarajah, who was in the refugee camp for three weeks.

Selva Sellathurai, who made his escape on a harrowing boat ride from the southern coast to northern Sri Lanka, credits his faith for keeping him and his family alive.

"We prayed for safety every day, and that prayer was answered."

As for Canada, he cannot say enough.

"If not for Canada, thousands of Tamils would have no place to go."

Similar events to commemorate Black July are being held in Britain, France, Denmark and Australia.

இன்றுகூட Hyde Park இல் சுமார் 10,000 மக்கள் வரையில் வந்திருந்தார்கள். ஆங்கில ஊடகங்களைக் காணவில்லை. நாம் எமக்குள் எப்படித்தான் உரக்கக் கத்தினாலும் அதனால் எதுவித பலனுமில்லை. வெளி உலகத்திற்குச் செல்லவேண்டும் என்றால் துளசி சிறீகாந்தன் போன்றவர்கள்தான் முன்வரவேண்டும்.

The memory of hundreds of Sri Lankan Tamils killed during the Black July of 1983 was kept alive last night as survivors gathered at Dundas Square.

"Everyone here was a victim or related to victims of Black July," Yogeswaran Kumar said of the time when the Sri Lankan government launched a vicious nationwide anti-Tamil campaign that left hundreds dead and thousands homeless.

Kumar was an accounting student in the capital city of Colombo when the terror was unleashed. His roommate was killed in the house where they lived and he survived because government soldiers were told he was Muslim.

"One word saved my life," said Kumar, who is still incredulous at what turned out to be his good fortune.

FAMILY SURVIVED

Thankarajah Ponniah's family survived to move to Canada where they were began a new life because the Sri Lankan government had burned everything they owned.

Ponniah, now 77, said he went back to his Sri Lankan home in 1992 -- a year after moving to Canada -- to join his daughter, but their home had been bulldozed and everything was gone.

"A soldier told me to go back to Canada," Ponniah remembered. "And I did, because I didn't have a reason to stay there."

Now he tells his grandchildren about where their family came from and the days of terror and chaos they survived to start a new life for them.

Ponniah's family is among 300,000 Canadians of Sri Lankan heritage now living in this country.

"I am always the first to raise the flag on Canada Day," Ponniah said proudly. "Canada is a beautiful place for accommodating us."

Toronto - Thousands of Tamil-Canadians are expected to converge in downtown Toronto tonight to say thanks to Canada.

They'll be joined by some federal MPs on the anniversary of what's called "Black July" in 1983 in Sri Lanka.

That's when Tamils fled their homeland in the face of what they say was state-sponsored terrorism against them.

Thousands of Sri Lankan Tamils fled as refugees and canada was one of the most welcoming countries.

Today there are more than 300,000 Canadians of Sri Lankan heritage living in Canada.
