போர் விமானத்தில் இருந்து, எதிரி இலக்கை துல்லியமாக தாக்கும் பிரம்மோஸ் ஏவுகணை ஆராய்ச்சி முடிந்தவுடன், 2015 ல் ஏவுகணை தாக்குதலில், உலகின் நம்பர் 1 இந்தியா தான் என, இந்த ஏவுகணை திட்ட இயக்குனர் ஏ.சிவதாணுபிள்ளை கூறினார். ராமேஸ்வரத்தில் அவர் கூறியதாவது: மூன்று டன் எடையுள்ள பிரம்மோஸ் ஏவுகணை, ஒலியை விட இரு மடங்கு வேகமாக சென்று, 290 கி.மீ. தொலைவில் உள்ள இலக்கை, கடல், தரை வழியாக சென்று, தாக்கக்கூடியது. இது தற்போது, ராணுவம், கடற்படையிடம் ஒப்படைக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இதுதவிர, போர் விமானத்தில் இருந்து, இந்த ஏவுகணையை செலுத்தி, எதிரி இலக்கை தாக்கும் வகையில், இதன் எடையை இரண்டரை டன்னாக குறைத்து, மேம்படுத்தப்பட உள்ளது.

50 per cent of India still defecates in open

In a country that touts itself as one of the world’s rising superpowers, 50 per cent of its population, having no access to toilets, still defecates in the open.

A joint WHO/UNICEF report ‘Progress on sanitation and drinking-water 2013 update’ finds out that 2.4 billion people worldwide will continue to lack improved sanitation facilities in 2015, thereby missing the Millennium Development Goal target. This comprises one-third of the world’s population.

The report said that in 2011, one billion people around the world still defecated in the open, with 90 per cent of all open defecation in rural areas.

In India, the report found that 50 per cent of the total population still defecated in the open, though compared to 1990, there has been improvement. In 1990, 74 per cent of India’s population had no toilets.

Expectedly, most of the open defecation in India was happening in rural areas where 66 per cent of the population used open fields to poop. In urban areas, people had more access to toilets and the population that still defecated in the open was 13 per cent.

Much of the improvement since 1990 also happened in rural areas, where two decades back a massive 90 per cent of the people relieved themselves in the open.

The global report warned that at the current rate of progress, the 2015 Millennium Development Goal target of halving the proportion of the 1990 population without sanitation will be missed by 8% – or half a billion people.

While UNICEF and WHO announced last year that the MDG drinking water target had been met and surpassed by 2010, the challenge to improve sanitation and reach those in need has led to a consolidated call for action to accelerate progress.

“There is an urgent need to ensure all the necessary pieces are in place – political commitment, funding, leadership – so the world can accelerate progress and reach the Millennium Development Goal sanitation target” said Dr Maria Neira, WHO Director for Public Health and Environment.

“The world can turn around and transform the lives of millions that still do not have access to basic sanitation. The rewards would be immense for health, ending poverty at its source, and well-being,” she said.
