Refugee camp bombing kills 65 in Sri Lanka: rebels

COLOMBO (AFP) - At least 65 civilians were killed and about 300 injured when government forces shelled a refugee camp in eastern Sri Lanka, Tamil rebels and medical sources said.

The bodies of the victims were brought to the Vakarai hospital inside the rebel-held part of Batticaloa following heavy artillery duels, while the wounded were taken to three hospitals in the district, a medical source said.

A spokesman for the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) said the final toll could rise up to 100.

The victims were ethnic Tamils who had been displaced by the recent upsurge in shelling in the region.

Sri Lanka's defence ministry did not comment on Tiger claims that the military had shelled a refugee centre but suggested that there may have been civilian losses.

"It was what the Tigers wanted -- to cause damages to the innocent Tamil civilians by provoking the army to retaliate for the Tigers' sporadic and indiscriminate shelling," the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

It accused the Tigers of using civilians as human shields to attack government forces in the restive region where both have blamed each other for starting the latest round of artillery duels.

"The Tigers had been planning this situation since the beginning of this month by detaining the innocent civilians in those areas by force to be used as a human shield when the time arises," the defence ministry statement said.

The Tigers said the attack was timed when the world attention was on Iraq and elections in the United States.

"Is it possible that the Sri Lankan military's intention was to teach the Tamils the lesson that they, the military, can kill refugees in such numbers, and no one can stop them," the Tigers said.

"The timing of the attack, when the world attention is focused on Iraq's Saddam Hussein and the US elections, must have also been selected to escape any international scrutiny of their methods," the Tigers said in a statement.

Military spokesman Prasad Samarasinghe said he was not aware of civilian casualties but confirmed "heavy artillery and mortar bomb exchanges" in Batticaloa district, around 300 kilometres (190 miles) east of here by road.

The latest bloodshed came as security forces and Tamil Tiger rebels accused each other of trying to spark full-scale war in a country where a Norwegian-arranged ceasefire is barely holding.

Nearly 3,300 people have been killed in fighting in the past year despite a 2002 truce in Sri Lanka's separatist conflict.

On Tuesday, the LTTE and the military both claimed several civilians and combatants had been killed or injured since Sunday in artillery duels in the east and north of the island.

Sri Lanka's key foreign aid donors -- the United States, European Union, Japan and Norway -- have called both the government and the Tigers to refrain from military action after peace talks between the combatants collapsed in Geneva last month.

The collapse left tens of thousands of residents of the northern peninsula of Jaffna cut off from food and other essentials as government troops have blocked the main highway to the area because rebels also use it to transport supplies.

The government Wednesday offered to open an alternate ferry route, but the guerrillas said that access road was badly damaged due to recent artillery and mortar bomb attacks.

Sri Lanka: Attack on displaced civilians must be investigated

At least 50 people have died and over 100 have been injured after an attack on a camp for internally displaced people in Batticaloa, Eastern Sri Lanka, according to Tamil Tiger sources. In response, Amnesty International's Asia Pacific Director Purna Sen said:

"It is appalling that the military should attack a camp for displaced people -- these are civilians who have already been forced from their homes because of the conflict."

"We condemn all attacks on civilians and are particularly saddened and shocked to see such a large-scale attack on civilians just days after the government's announcement of its Commission of Inquiry into human rights abuses."

"Killing and injuring civilians can never be justified. The government must investigate this terrible attack as a matter of urgency. It must ensure that those responsible are brought to justice to signal to the rest of the military that attacking civilians will not be tolerated."

மட்டக்களப்பு வாகரையில் இடம்பெயர்ந்த 45 அப்பாவி பொதுமக்களைப் படுகொலை செய்த சிறிலங்கா இராணுவத்தின் கொடூர செயலுக்கு சர்வதேச மன்னிப்புச் சபை கண்டனம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

இது தொடர்பாக அந்த அமைப்பு வெளியிட்டுள்ள அறிக்கை:

மட்டக்களப்பில் உள்நாட்டில் இடம்பெயர்ந்தோர் முகாம் மீது நடத்தப்பட்ட தாக்குதலில் 50 பொதுமக்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளனர். 100-க்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் படுகாயமடைந்துள்ளனர் என்று விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் தகவல்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.

இனப்பிரச்சனையால் வீடுகளை இழந்து வெளியேற்றப்பட்டு இடம்பெயர்ந்த பொதுமக்கள் மீதான தாக்குதல் பயங்கரமானது.

மனித உரிமை மீறல்கள் தொடர்பான விசாரணை ஆணையம் அமைக்கப்படும் என்று அரசாங்கம் அறிவித்த சில நாட்களிலேயே பாரிய அளவிலான பொதுமக்கள் மீதான தாக்குதல் அதிர்ச்சியும் வருத்தமும் அளிக்கிறது.

பொதுமக்களை கொல்வதும் காயப்படுத்துவதும் ஏற்க முடியாதது. இந்த கொடூரத் தாக்குதல் குறித்து அரசாங்கம் உடனடியாக விசாரணை நடத்த வேண்டும். இந்த சம்பவத்துக்கு காரணமானவர்கள் நீதியின் முன் நிறுத்தப்பட வேண்டும். பொதுமக்கள் மீதான தாக்குதல் சகித்துக் கொள்ளப்பட முடியாதது என்று அதில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இவ்வாறன யுத்த சூழ்நிலையில் தமிழீழ நிர்வாகப் பகுதிகளில் யுத்தப் பாதுகாப்பு நிலை அறிவிக்கப்படுவது அவசியமானது. குண்டுச் சத்தம், அல்லது, விமானப் பறப்புத் தெரிந்தால் மக்கள் பாதுகாப்பான வழிகளைத் தேடுவதற்கு வசதிகள் செய்தாக வேண்டும். இப்படியான நிலையால் தான் உயிரிழப்பைக் குறைக்க முடியும். கொடுங்கோலன் மகிந்த மக்களைக் கொன்று கொண்டிருக்கும் போது, வெறுமனே கண்டங்களை மட்டும் இங்கே எழுதிக் கொண்டிருப்பதில் பிரியோசமில்லை.

நாமும் ஏதாவது எம் மக்களின் உயிரழப்பைக் குறைக்க செய்தாக வேண்டும். புலத்தில் இருந்து அழுத்தம் கொடுக்க, முயற்சிக்க வேண்டும்.

ஆனால் இப்படி சிறிலங்கா அரசு கொடுரமாக நடந்து கொள்ள, கிழக்கு மக்களைக் காக்க என்று சொல்லிப் புறப்பட்ட கருணாக் கும்பலுக்கும் முழுப் பொறுப்பு உண்டு. தமிழினத்தைக் கொன்று குவிக்க எதிரியோடு துணை போகும் நிலை சாபக் கேடானது.

சிங்கள இராணுவத் தரப்பு, முதலில் மக்களைக் கொல்ல வில்லை என்றது. இப்போது கண்காணிப்புக் குழு, ஊடகங்களில் வந்துள்ள படத்தினால், புலிகள் மக்களை பணயமாக வைத்து நடத்துகின்றனர் என்று பொய்ச் செய்தியை வெளியிடுகின்றது. பாடசாலையில் தங்கியிருந்த மக்கள் மீது குண்டு வீசிக் கொலை செய்து விட்டு, கொஞ்சம் கூட ஈவிரக்கமின்றிக் கதைக்கும் இந்தக் காட்டு மிராண்டிகளோடு, எனியும் கூடிச் சமாதானம் பேசுவது சாத்தியமா?

அழிப்பு நடவடிக்கையை சர்வதேசம் தடுத்து நிறுத்த வேண்டும் மட்டு அரசியல் துறை வேண்டுகோள்

சிறிலங்கா அரசின் தமிழின அழிப்பு நடவடிக்கைகள் உச்ச நிலை அடைந்துள்ள நிலையில் தமிழ்மக்களுக்கு ஏற்பட்டுள்ள அவல த்தை சர்வதேச சமூகம் தலையிட்டு உடனடியாக நிறுத்த வேண்டும். இவ்வாறு மட்டக்களப்பு மாவட்ட அரசியல்துறை விடுத்துள்ள கண்டன அறிக்கையில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

கதிரவெளியில் அப்பாவிப் பொதும க்கள் பலியான சம்பவத்தைக் கண்டித்து விடுத் துள்ள அந்த அறிக்கையில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாவது:-

நேற்றுக்காலை மட்டக்களப்பு கதிர வெளி விக்கினேஸ்வரா மகாவித்தியாலயத்தில் சம்பூர் பகுதியில் இடம் பெயர்ந்து தங்கியிருந்த மக்கள் மீது சிறிலங்கா படையினர் நடத்திய ஆட்லறி மற்றும் பல்குழல் பீரங்கி தாக்குதலின் போது ஆறு குழந்தைகள் உட்பட 50க்கும் மேற்பட்ட பொதுமக்களும் பலியாகியுள்ளனர். இதன் போது பாடசாலை முற்றாக சேதமடைந்துள்ளது.

இதன் போது அயலில் அமைந்திருந்த 117 வீடுகளும் சேதமடைந்துள்ளது. இத் தாக்குதலின் போது 107 பொதுமக்கள் காயமடைந்து வைத்தியசாலையில் சிகிச்சை பெற்று வருகின்றனர். காயம டைந்த மக்களில் பலரின் நிலை கவலைக்கிடமான நிலையில் சிகிச்சை பெற்று வருகின்றனர். இந்த தாக்குதல் தொடர்பாக போர் நிறுத்தக் கண்காணிப்புக் குழுவினருக்கும், சர்வதேச செஞ்சிலுவைச் சங்கத்தி னருக்கும் மற்றும் ஐ.நா நிறுவனங் களுக்கும் தெரியப்படுத்தியுள்ளோம்.

அண்மைக்காலமாக மட்டக்களப்பு வாகரை போன்ற பகுதிகளிலும் சிறிலங்கா படையினர் வலிந்த தாக்குதல்களை செய்வது மட்டுமின்றி விடுதலைப்புலிகள் மீது குற்றம் சாட்டியும் வருகின்றனர்.

எனவே சிறிலங்கா அரசு நடாத்துகின்ற பயங்காரவாத செயற்பா டுகளுக்கு எதிராக ஐரோப்பிய ஒன்றிய நாடுகளும் சமாதானத்துக்கு தலை மை வகிக்கின்ற நோர்வே அரசும் மற்றும் உதவி வழங்குகின்ற நாடுக ளும் உடனடியாக தமிழ் மக்கள் மீது அவலச் சாவை நடத்துகின்ற சிறில ங்கா அரசுக்கு அழுத்தங்கள் கொடு க்க வேண்டுகிறோம்.

அதேவேளை அப்பாவிப் பொதுமக்கள் மீது நடத்தப்பட்ட இந்த மிலேச்சத்தனமான தாக்குதலை தமிழீழ விடுதலைப்புலிகளின் மட்ட க்களப்பு மாவட்ட அரசியல்துறை தம து வன்மையான கண்டனத்தை தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறது. அத்துடன் உயிரிழந்த பொதுமக்களின் குடும்பத் தினருக்கும் தமது ஆழ்ந்த அனுதாபத்தை தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறது.

- மட்டக்களப்பு ஈழனாதம்

வைத்தியசாலையில் 15 பேர் மரணம் -தினக்குரல்

மட்டக்களப்பு, கதிரவெளி பகுதியில் இடம்பெயர்ந்தோர் தங்கியிருந்த பாடசாலை ஒன்றின் மீது நேற்று புதன்கிழமை நண்பகல் படையினர் மேற்கொண்ட மிகக் கடும் ஆட்லறி ஷெல் தாக்குதல் மற்றும் பல்குழல் ரொக்கட் தாக்குதலில் குழந்தைகள், சிறுவர்கள், பெண்கள் உட்பட 45 அகதிகள் கொல்லப்பட்டதுடன், 125 இற்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் படுகாயமடைந்துள்ளனர்.

வாகரை மற்றும் கதிரவெளிப் பகுதியில் கடந்த ஒரு வாரமாக முப்படையினரும் கடும் தாக்குதலை நடத்தி வந்த நிலையிலேயே நேற்று நண்பகல் இந்தக் கொடூரத் தாக்குதல் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது.

மூதூர் கிழக்கில் இடம்பெற்ற பாரிய படை நடவடிக்கைகளையடுத்து அப்பகுதிகளிலிருந்து இடம்பெயர்ந்த 40,000 இற்கும் மேற்பட்ட மக்கள் வாகரை மற்றும் கதிரவெளி பகுதிகளிலேயே பல்வேறு பகுதிகளிலும் தங்கியிருக்கின்றனர்.

கதிரவெளி விக்கினேஸ்வரா வித்தியாலயத்தில் மட்டும் ஐயாயிரத்திற்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் தஞ்சமடைந்துள்ளனர். இதனைச் சூழவுள்ள பகுதிகளில் 2,000 இற்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் தங்கியுள்ளனர்.

இந்த நிலையிலேயே நேற்று நண்பகல் இந்தப் பாடசாலை மீதும் அதனை அண்டிய பகுதிகளிலும் தொடர்ச்சியாக பல ஷெல்களும் பல்குழல் ரொக்கட்டுகளும் வந்து வீழ்ந்தபோது பேரழிவு ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது.

இந்தப் பகுதியில் நண்பகல் 11.50 மணி முதல் பிற்பகல் ஒரு மணிவரை மிக உக்கிரமான தாக்குதல் நடத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.

பாடசாலை மீதும் பாடசாலை வளாகத்தினுள்ளும் ஆட்லறி ஷெல்களும் பல்குழல் ரொக்கட்டுகளும் வீழ்ந்து பேரழிவை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளன.

இதனால் குழந்தைகள், சிறுவர்கள், பெண்கள் எனப் பலர் உடல் சிதறிப் பலியானார்கள். நூற்றுக்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் படுகாயமடைந்த நிலையில் அந்தந்த இடங்களிலேயே வீழ்ந்தனர்.

ஷெல்களும் ரொக்கட்டுகளும் பாடசாலையிலும் அதன் சுற்றுப் புறப் பகுதிகளிலும் வந்து விழத் தொடங்கவே அங்கிருந்த அகதிகள் அவலக் குரல் எழுப்பியவாறு நாலாபுறமும் தப்பியோடத் தொடங்கினர்.

ஷெல்கள், ரொக்கட்டுகள் வெடித்தபோது எழுந்த பாரிய சத்தத்திற்கு மத்தியில் மக்களின் அவலக் குரல்கள் எழுந்ததாகவும் மீட்புப் பணிக்குச் சென்றவர்கள் தெரிவித்தனர்.

இந்தப் பாடசாலை மற்றும் அதனை அண்டிய பகுதிகளில் அரை மணி நேரத்துக்கிடையில் மிக அதிகளவு ஷெல்களும் ரொக்கட்டுகளும் வீழ்ந்து வௌ டித்துள்ளன.

இந்த அகோர தாக்குதல் முடிவடைந்த பின்னர் உதவிப் பணியாளர்களும் பொதுமக்களும் பாடசாலைக்கு விரைந்து சென்று மீட்புப் பணிகளில் ஈடுபட்டனர்.

பிற்பகல் மூன்று மணி வரை நடைபெற்ற மீட்டுப் பணியில் பாடசாலைக்குள்ளிருந்தும் அதனைச் சூழவுள்ள பகுதிகளிலிருந்தும் மிகவும் சிதைவடைந்த நிலையில் 30 சடலங்கள் மீட்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.

இதில் ஆறு மாதத்துக்குட்பட்ட ஆறு குழந்தைகள் உட்பட பத்து சிறுவர்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.

125 க்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் படுகாயமடைந்த நிலையில், 50,000 மக்களுக்குள்ள ஒரேயொரு ஆஸ்பத்திரியான வாகரை ஆஸ்பத்திரிக்கு கொண்டு செல்லப்பட்டனர்.

இதேநேரம், கடந்த பத்து நாட்களாக வாகரைக்கான பாதை மூடப்பட்டிருப்பதால் படுகாயமடைந்தவர்களை உடனடியாக மேலதிக சிகிச்சைகளுக்காக வாழைச்சேனை ஆஸ்பத்திரிக்கோ அல்லது மட்டக்களப்பு ஆஸ்பத்திக்கோ கொண்டு செல்ல முடியாத நிலை ஏற்பட்டது.

மட்டக்களப்பு - திருகோணமலை பிரதான வீதியில் வாகரையிலிருந்து வடக்கே சுமார் 15 கிலோ மீற்றர் தூரத்தில் கதிரவெளியுள்ளது.

இந்தத் தாக்குதல் பற்றி உடனடியாக மட்டக்களப்பிலுள்ள சர்வதேச செஞ்சிலுவைச் சங்கத்தினருக்கும் (ஐ.சி.ஆர்.சி.) போர் நிறுத்தக் கண்காணிப்புக் குழுவினருக்கும் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது.

எனினும், ஐ.சி.ஆர்.சி. யினர் அங்கு வருவதற்கு முதலில் மாங்கேணி படைமுகாமில் அனுமதி வழங்கப்படவில்லை. பலத்த போராட்டத்தின் மத்தியில் 3.45 மணியளவிலேயே ஐ.சி.ஆர்.சி.யினர் ஒரு சில அம்புலன்ஸ்கள் சகிதம் கதிரவெளியைச் சென்றடைந்தனர்.

இதற்கிடையில் மிக மோசமாகப் படுகாயமடைந்த நிலையில் அவசர சிகிச்சை கிடைக்காது மேலும் 15 பேர் வாகரை ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் உயிரிழந்துள்ளனர்.

படுகாயமடைந்தவர்கள் அனைவரையும் அனுமதிக்கக் கூடிய இடவசதி வாகரை ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் இல்லாததால் எண்பது பேர் வரையே அங்கு அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டனர்.

இதில், மிக மோசமாக காயமடைந்த 60 பேர் பின்னர் ஐ.சி.ஆர்.சி.யின் வழித்துணையுடன் வாழைச்சேனை மற்றும் மட்டக்களப்பு ஆஸ்பத்திரிக்கு கொண்டு செல்லப்பட்டனர்.

கொல்லப்பட்டவர்களில் பத்திற்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் சிறுவர்கள். எட்டுப் பேர் பெண்கள். 27 பேர் ஆண்களெனவும் தெரிவிக்கப்படுகிறது.

படுகாயமடைந்தவர்களில் ஐம்பதுக்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் சிறுவர்களாவர்.

நேற்று முன்தினம் மாலை இப்பகுதியில் விமானத் தாக்குதல் நடைபெற்ற நிலையிலும் நேற்றுக் காலை உளவு விமானமொன்று நீண்ட நேரம் இப்பகுதியில் கண்காணிப்பில் ஈடுபட்ட நிலையிலுமே நேற்று நண்பகல் இந்தத் தாக்குதல் நடத்தப்பட்டுள்ளதாக அப்பகுதி மக்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றனர்.

அண்மைக் காலத்தில் இப்பகுதியில் தொடர்ந்தும் இடம் பெற்று வரும் கடும் தாக்குதல்களால் மாறி மாறி இடம் பெயர்ந்து வரும் மக்கள் நேற்றைய தாக்குதலால் பேரச்சம் அடைந்துள்ளனர்.

இதேநேரம், வாகரைப் பகுதியில் புலிகள் பொது மக்களை மனிதக் கேடயங்களாகப் பயன்படுத்தி வருவதாக பாதுகாப்பு அமைச்சு தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

பொது மக்களை இவ்வாறு பயன்படுத்தி சர்வதேச சமூகத்தின் முன்னால் படையினருக்கு அவப்பெயரை ஏற்படுத்தவும் தங்கள் பக்கம் அனுதாபத்தை ஏற்படுத்தவும் முயல்வதாக படைத்தரப்பு நம்புவதாகவும் பாதுகாப்பு அமைச்சு கூறியுள்ளது.

அரசியல் பொய்யர்கள் தங்கள் பித்தலாட்டங்களைத் தொடங்கிவிட்டார்கள். சக்தி டிவி பகல் செய்தியில் 'தாங்கள் இந்த தாக்குதலை மறைக்காமல் சர்வதேசத்திடமும், இணைத்தலைமை நாடுகளுக்கும் தெரிவித்திருப்பதாகவும். விடுதலைப்புலிகள் பொதுமக்களை மனித கேடயங்களாகப் பாவிப்பதாலே இப்படிப்பட்ட அவலங்கள் நடப்பதாக" கெஹெலியவும், இராணுவப் பொய்யன் பிரசாந்தும்; தெரிவித்திருப்பதாக செய்தியில் வாசித்தார்கள்.

மட்டக்களப்பு வாகரையில் சிறிலங்கா இராணுவம் நடத்திய வெறியாட்டம் தொடர்பாக விசாரணை நடத்த வேண்டும் என்று ஐக்கிய தேசியக் கட்சி கோரிக்கை விடுத்துள்ளது.

கொழும்பில் இன்று வியாழக்கிழமை அக்கட்சியின் பொதுச்செயலாளர் திஸ்ஸ அத்தநாயக்க வெளியிட்ட அறிக்கையில் இது தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

வாகரை தாக்குதலைக் கண்டிப்பதாகவும் இது தொடர்பில் அரசாங்கம் உரிய விசாரணைகள் நடத்த வேண்டும் என்றும் அவர் கேட்டுக் கொண்டுள்ளார்.

வாகரையில் நடத்தப்பட்ட தாக்குதலில் 45 இடம்பெயர்ந்த அப்பாவி பொதுமக்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டனர். நூற்றுக்கணக்கான குழந்தைகள், பெண்கள் உள்ளிட்டோர் படுகாயமடைந்தனர்.

The Sri Lankan government has been heavily criticised for an artillery bombardment that killed dozens of civilians in the east of the island.

Peace negotiator Erik Solheim said he was "very troubled" by the attack and urged the government and Tamil Tigers to honour pledges at recent talks.

Rights group Amnesty International described the attack as "appalling".

The government expressed "regret" that the army shelled the camp for people displaced by fighting near Batticaloa.

"Yet again it is civilians who are being killed and made to suffer due to military operations.

"I am extremely disappointed that the parties are not honouring the promises they made in Geneva a week and a half ago to refrain from launching any military offensives."

The camp was hit by the army in a heavy exchange of fire with the Tamil Tigers in rebel-held territory. The rebels say at least 45 civilians were killed on the spot - three more died later of their injuries.

Government defence spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella told the AFP news agency that the military had targeted two Tamil Tiger artillery positions in Wednesday's attack, but conceded a civilian centre had also been hit.

"While we regret this whole episode, we also must say that national security is uppermost in our minds," he told reporters.

Mr Rambukwella said the government would investigate the incident, but said the army was responding to an earlier Tamil Tiger attack and accused the rebels of using civilians as human shields.

He warned that the number of casualties may rise, and accused the rebels of firing mortar and artillery rounds at government positions for more than a week.

International truce monitors who have visited the scene described total panic as tens of thousands of people try to leave the area.

Two hospitals have received more than 100 casualties, including at least 17 children.

"There were a lot of explosions, so many people dead and wounded," 29-year-old survivor Palachchenai Kadiraveli told the Reuters news agency.

"A lot of children died... there are thousands of people trying to leave."

Call for answers

The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) estimates that about 35,000 people have been displaced by fighting which flared further north in August.

"Our monitors saw there were no military installations in the camp area, so we would certainly like some answers from the military regarding the nature and reasons of this attack," SLMM spokeswoman Helen Olafsdottir said.

The human rights group, Amnesty International, said: "It is appalling that the military should attack a camp for displaced people - these are civilians who have already been forced from their homes because of the conflict."

The Tamil Tigers say the number of deaths could be as high as 100.

The government agent for Batticaloa, S Puniyamoorthy, said more than 1,000 refugees were living in the camp - a school building in the town of Kathiraveli near Vakarai.

According to reports, bombs fell in the area for about an hour around midday.

The government says nearly 3,000 people - troops, rebels and civilians - have been killed in violence since last year. There is no reliable independent confirmation of that figure.

Correspondents say a ceasefire signed between the two sides in 2002 now exists in name only.

The Tigers and the Sri Lankan military have clashed several times in the recent days since peace talks collapsed in Geneva in late October.
