இது ஒரு ஆங்கில பதிவு.  அமெரிக்கா மற்றும் பிரித்தானியா ஆகிய நாடுகளில் வசித்து விட்டு தன் தாய் நாட்டுக்கு நிரந்தரமாக திரும்பிய ஒரு சிங்கள இனத்தவரது அனுபவப் பதிவு இது.

இலங்கையில் இருக்கும் அரசு, அது செயல்படும் தன்மை, விவாசாயத்தில் Sir ஒரே இரவில் கொண்டு வந்த மாற்றம், எங்கும் நிறைந்து இருக்கும் உளுத்துப் போன ஊழல் என்பனவற்றால் இலங்கையில் எல்லா முயற்சிகளும் வீணாக போகும் நிலை பற்றி குறிப்பிடுகின்றார்.

ஒரு சிங்களவருக்கே இப்படி என்றால் அங்கு நிரந்தரமாக போக நினைக்கும் தமிழர்களுக்கு......

When the President exhorted expatriates in his Independence Day Speech to invest back in the land of their birth, I felt I must give my experience in this matter:

Having lived overseas for 33 years, I returned to Sri Lanka in 2004 to live permanently, having severed all links with both the USA where I had lived for 15 years and the UK where I had lived for 18 years and when I returned I did not even have a bank account overseas, bringing everything I had back home to SL.

I bought a license land of paddy and coconut in Raja Ela, Hingurakgoda in 2006 and started farming and built a house close by in a land I had bought earlier in Ratmale, where I could live in. The reality is that I got Electricity to the Paddy land only late last year in 2021, and Electricity to the Ratmale property only in 2020. It was a long struggle without the use of influence in order to get both!

I have blogged my life throughout and later on FB when that became more popular, so that others who may wish to follow my example would have some point of comparison, and I know many who are still considering this move, follow my daily postings and life with its ups and downs in the OLD COUNTRY!

Put simply, the environment is NOT conducive to return, especially for families as opportunities for meritocracy, and advancement based on ethics and fair play are few and far between. I consciously decided on farming as being what I wanted to do, and I have documented the travails of life on this venture and have made innumerable suggestions for its improvement and spoken to many people, but basically every angle falls on deaf ears, as no one has truly taken the trouble to understand the fundamental flaw of public policy and political opportunism that has mired Sri Lanka in an agricultural failed state, despite the Mahaweli Scheme, which actually added to the woes instead of solved the intractable problem, namely a “A Peasant does not a Farmer make!”. A million families have been given land for farming, and of that at MOST 100,000 have benefited from it as being inspired and dedicated enough to farm. The others have wasted the land given to them and wasted all the money spent on them, namely, expensive irrigation scheme water, subsidized fertilizer, and innumerable government assistance from Samurdhi to free planting material, agricultural advice and assistance and even Veterinary Services, all wasted in the name of political expediency. 

Of course the whole shooting match came to a crazy conclusion, where even those who one would consider to be the real farmers, got stabbed in the back by a level of treachery unseen in world history, where current farming practices were banned on ONE DAY without warning, even destroying the most competent and experienced farmers. Of course once the dust clears half of farmers cannot continue and MUST be given an exit strategy for survival. NO ONE HAS YET COME UP WITH A SENSIBLE PLAN ON THE AFTERMATH.

I show below some photos of the early years of living, by “KUPPI LAMPUWA” Dr Godamunne’s kerosene lamps that prevent falling and burning the house down. We had to cook out in the open, until we built a kitchen and we ate what we caught in the lakes and streams as seen in some of the photos.

I was given a hand me down lap top to document what I was doing in the blogs. www.rajaratarala.blogspot.com and www.villagerinsrilanka.blogspot.com and later www.kalpanakaranna.blogspot.com before graduating to this FB page. 

To me it has been a memorable journey, but not having a wife and family, I was able to rough it out in the wild, and putting up with hardship, which most expatriates would not tolerate. Unless and until there is governance of the sensible, completely abolishing the present system of politics as a business, I will say one has to be out of their tiny minds to consider investing, or returning to SL.

My experience is unique as I was prepared for the worst, and I had cut my umbilical cord completely, so there was no going back as such to the West, so I am still struggling, but still hoping to achieve a goal or two such as a seasoned paddy farmer of a reasonable size, able to give the opportunist millers a run for their money, but when we cannot import new technology to make it happen, it all takes much longer in this environment. 

In short I have not yet given up.

I have dug up the photos from an old file I found from 2008 less than 4 years since I returned documenting life then, but the blogs I referred to have a more detailed synopsis of daily living.

எங்கடை ஆட்கள் போனால் " சொக்கத் தங்கம்' என்றுதான் சொல்லுவினம்..

இப்போதிருக்கும் பழமைவாத அரசியல்வாதிகள் அழிந்தபின் இனி வரும் புதிய சமுதாயங்களால் தமிழினத்திற்கும் சிங்கள இனத்திற்கும் புதிய பாதை வரும் என்ற நப்பாசை எனக்கு இன்னும் இருக்கின்றது.

மூக்கு இருக்கும் வரைக்கும் சளி இருக்கும் என்பது போல் இன்றைய தமிழ்/சிங்கள   அரசியல்வாதிகள் இருக்கும் வரைக்கும் பழையதையே பேசிப்பேசி தம் பைகளை நிரப்புவர்.

மேற்கத்திய நாடுகளில் அங்கிருக்கும் வசதிகளையும், அலுவலக நடைமுறைகளையும், சமூக அமைப்பையும் 33 வருடங்களாக அனுபவித்து வாழ்ந்துவிட்டு சொந்த நாட்டிற்கு நிரந்தரமாக திரும்பும்போது அதே மனநிலையில் இலங்கையில் எதிர்பார்ப்பது இயல்பு, ஆனால் சொந்த நாட்டின் யதார்த்தத்தை புரிந்துகொண்டு வாழ்ந்தால் இந்த புலம்பல்கள் எழ வாய்ப்பில்லை.

உதாரணத்திற்கு இங்கே அரபு நாடுகளில் மிக அருமையான வழுவழுவென அகலமான சாலைகளில் குறைந்தது 120கி.மீ வேகத்தில் பறந்துவிட்டு, அதையே எனது சொந்த கிராமத்திலோ (அல்லது மதுரையிலோ) எதிர்பார்க்க இயலுமா? அங்கே இன்று வரை தார் சாலைகள் இல்லை, மண் சாலைகள்தான். அதற்காக பிறந்த மண்ணை மறக்கவோ, துறக்கவோ, சலிப்பு கொள்ளவோ முடியுமா?

வசதிகளையும், சுதந்திரத்தையும், ஊழலற்ற சமூகத்தையும் மேலைநாடுகளில் அனுபவித்துவிட்டு சொந்த நாட்டிற்கு வர தயக்கமிருந்தால், தயவுசெய்து வராதீர்கள், அங்கேயே வாழ்ந்துவிடுங்கள். அதுவே அனைவருக்கும் நல்லது.

இலங்கை அரசின் விவசாய அபிவிருத்திக்கான வளர்ச்சித் திட்டங்கள், கொள்கைகள் பிழையாக உள்ளன என்று சொல்லுகின்றார். நிர்வாகச் செயற்பாடுகளில் இருக்கும் ஊழல்களை மாற்றமுடியாதுதான். ஆனால் ஒரு சாமானிய விவசாயியாக வாழ பல தடைகள் இருப்பது, அங்கு விவசாயம் செய்து வாழும் சாதாரண குடிமக்கள் முன்னேற வழி இல்லை என்றே காட்டுகின்றது. மகாவலி அபிவிருத்தித் திட்டத்தின் விவசாயத்தில் முன்னேற்றம் ஏற்படவில்லை என்றும் சொல்லுகின்றார். 

பழைய கால விவசாய முறைகளை விட்டு, நவீன விவசாய முறைகளுக்குப் போக பெரு நிலப்பரப்பில் விவசாயம் மேற்கொள்ளப்படவேண்டும். சிறு சிறு விவசாய நிலங்களை வைத்துள்ள விவசாயிகள் அவற்றினை ஒன்றாக்கி ஒரு கூட்டுறவின் மூலம் நவீன இயந்திரங்களைப் பாவித்து விவசாய உற்பத்தியில் ஈடுபடவேண்டும்..

ஏன்னென்றால் அதுதான் பன்றிமயக் கோட்ப்பாடு.முன்னர் கண்டி, திருகோணமாய்,காலி ,கதிர்காமம் எல்லாம் போனீர்களோ. இப்ப போகலாம்
