கடந்த சனிக்கிழமை விடியற்காலை 2:00 மணியளவில் கௌதம் குகதாசன் (19 வயது) என்கிற விண்ட்சர் பல்கலைக்கழக மாணவர் குத்திக் கொலை செய்யப்பட்டார்.

WINDSOR, ONT.—A Toronto man killed in a downtown stabbing was a student at the city’s university, police say.

Gautham (Kevin) Kugathasan, 19, came from Toronto to study and lived near the University of Windsor campus, police said.

They said he was one of six men stabbed when two groups got into a fight early Saturday.

The five other men injured in the attack are expected to recover, police said.

Investigators said they expect to file charges in the near future as several persons of interest have been identified.

Kugathasan’s autopsy was scheduled for Sunday in London, Ont., police said.

இதில் இன்னும் கொடுமை என்னவென்றால் மகன் இரவில் நேரத்தை இவ்வாறெல்லாம் செலவிடுகிறார் என்கிற விடயம் பெற்றோருக்குத் தெரிந்திருக்கவில்லை.

 

 

Fatal stabbing forces students to think twice about downtown Windsor nightlife

 

The bloody brawl on downtown streets that led to the death of a University of Windsor student over the weekend has other students thinking twice about coming to the core for their good times.

“I know sometimes people have huge egos and they want to confront someone when they feel insulted,” lamented Kanesha Graham, 22, on campus on Monday. “It’s not even worth it.”

Although she wasn’t there, Graham was dismayed to learn about the incident around the intersection of Park and Pelissier streets — where a late night fight between two groups led to stab wounds for at least six males, including Gautham (Kevin) Kugathasan.

Kugathasan was pronounced dead at a hospital Saturday morning.

“I know people have quarrels, but a stabbing? It kind of took me off guard,” said Graham, a fourth-year French student. “Someone from my school…. That could have been any one of my friends.”

Graham said she goes downtown occasionally — she remembers witnessing a hair-pulling fight between two females on Pitt Street just a couple of weeks ago — but the threat of violence has convinced her it’s safer to socialize at the homes of friends.

“I’m not into all the hype. The people who go downtown … you know they get drunk and they’re kind of irrational. At least when you go to someone’s house, you know the people around you.”

Meanwhile, few details have emerged about the 19-year-old homicide victim.

In a recent tweet — posted on Oct. 14, five days before his death — Kugathasan rapped: “Brain washed by the block can consume my life Cool n**** but a killa when the mood is right.”

In another tweet, posted Aug. 24, he rapped: “Locked up they won’t let me out. Had a long day at court s*** stress me out.”

Kugathasan grew up in northwest Scarborough, where he attended L’Amoreaux Collegiate Institute — a public high school.

Scarborough’s L’Amoreaux neighbourhood is known for its diversity, with South Asians and Chinese being the two largest groups.

Kugathasan counted many friends and associates from within his ethnic community.

Word of his death has led to tribute images and “R.I.P.” messages on social media.

In an online questionnaire, he described himself as a Christian.

A service has been arranged for Kugathasan at Chapel Ridge Funeral Home and Cremation Centre in Markham.

Visitation will take place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Back on the University of Windsor campus, 19-year-old drama student Erik De Paulsen said it bothers him that he’s seen people carrying weapons casually.

“I’ve been on the bus and seen a knife poking out of someone’s pocket…. Classic folding knife, with the belt clip.”

“People give the excuse, ‘Oh, I need to open packages,’” De Paulsen said. “X-Acto knives, pen knives work just as well. You don’t need a full-sized knife.”

Despite De Paulsen’s eye-catching personal style — purple mohawk and punk clothes — he said his first response to any negative attention or comments would be to brush it off.

“I’ve heard of conflicts between different groups where people just try to show their masculinity, show their dominance,” he said.

“It’s just unnecessary. The violence is not something we need, as a culture or as a community.

Aileen Ward, a 25-year-old fine arts student, said she’s tired of witnessing downtown altercations grow out of people simply looking at each other.

“That’s pretty terrifying. That makes you think: If you look at someone the wrong way, the next thing you know, you could be the one getting into a fight — not even trying to,” she said.

Ward said she stopped going to the night clubMynt on University Avenue West because of the “tough crowd.” Although she enjoyed the dubstep and electronic music played at the venue, the atmosphere nowadays makes her nervous.

“Too many idiots,” she complained. “It’s a dress-up bar, but at the same time, there are a lot of guys who are pretty built.”

Ward said she still thinks about a previous example of Pelissier Street violence:  the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Luis Acosta-Escobar in December 2007. Ward said she knew Acosta-Escobar.

“He was trying to break up a fight, and he got shot,” Ward said.

“It’s like Windsor is trying to turn into Detroit.”

நியாயமான கேள்வி.

எமது இளமைக்காலங்களில் பெற்றோர் எம்மை ஓரளவு கட்டுப்படுத்தக்கூடியதாக் இருந்தது. காரணம் நாம் கட்டுமீறி போகுமளவிற்கு சமுதாய சூழ்நிலைகள் இடங்கொடுக்கவில்லை.... ஆனால் இன்று அப்படியல்ல....பேஸ்புக்,ஸ்கைப்,ஈமெயில் எனும் சத்தமில்லா தகவல் சாதனங்கள் மூலம் சகலதும் நடந்தேறியபின்னர்தான் இவர் இன்னாரின் பிள்ளை என்பது வெளிச்சத்திற்கு வருகின்றது.

காது குத்துதல், பச்சை குத்துதல், இரவு விடுதி போதல் எல்லாம் மேற்கத்தைய சமூகத்தோடு ஒருங்கிணையும் வழிகள் அல்ல. படிப்பும் அதனால் வருகிற மதிப்பும் சமூக அந்தஸ்தும் நாங்கள் என்ன நிறத்தில இருந்தாலும் எங்களை மேற்கத்தையர்கள் மதிக்கச் செய்யும். இதைக் கனடாவில் அனேகமான பெற்றோர் உணர்ந்திருக்கிறார்கள். சில பிள்ளைகள் உணர மறுப்பதால் இது போன்ற சோகங்கள்!

காது குத்துதல், பச்சை குத்துதல், இரவு விடுதி போதல் எல்லாம் மேற்கத்தைய சமூகத்தோடு ஒருங்கிணையும் வழிகள் அல்ல. படிப்பும் அதனால் வருகிற மதிப்பும் சமூக அந்தஸ்தும் நாங்கள் என்ன நிறத்தில இருந்தாலும் எங்களை மேற்கத்தையர்கள் மதிக்கச் செய்யும். இதைக் கனடாவில் அனேகமான பெற்றோர் உணர்ந்திருக்கிறார்கள். சில பிள்ளைகள் உணர மறுப்பதால் இது போன்ற சோகங்கள்!

 

உண்மைதான்.. வட அமெரிக்காவில் வேலைச் சமூகத்தில் இணையவேண்டும் என்றால் ஹாக்கி பற்றி தெரியவேண்டும்.. Football பற்றி அறிந்திருக்க வேண்டும் என்று எம்மவர்களே பில்டப் கொடுப்பார்கள். உண்மையில் விருப்பமிருந்தால் இவற்றைத் தொடரலாம்.. தவறில்லை.. ஆனால் வலிந்து அறிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டிய அவசியமில்லை. எனக்கு இவைபற்றி ஒரு மண்ணும் தெரியாது..  அதனால் வேலையில் கிரிக்கட்டைப் பற்றி என்னிடம் விசாரிப்பார்கள்..

தலை மட்டும் ஆட்ட  ஆள் வேண்டுமல்லவா??

டொராண்டோவை விட்டு கொஞ்சம் தூரம் (WATERLOO, WINDSER, HAMILTON ) தள்ளி செல்லும் மாணவர்கள் முதலாம் வருடம் பல்கலை கழக விடுதியில் தங்கலாம் ,பின்னர் அவர்களாகவே இடம் எடுத்து தங்கவேண்டும் .அப்படி ஒரு வீடோ அல்லது அப்பாட்மென்டோ எடுத்து நாலு ஐந்து பேர் தங்குவார்கள் .வாரவிடுமுறை வர ரொறோண்டோவில் இருந்து நண்பர்கள் அங்கு போய் பாட்டி போடுவது ஒரு வழக்கம் ஆகிவிட்டது .(வீட்டுக்காரர்களும் இல்லை இடமும் ஒரு கிராமம் மாதிரி வித்தியாசம் ஆக இருக்கும் ).நாலு ஐந்து வருடங்களுக்கு முதல் இரு தமிழ் இளைஞர்கள் வாகனத்தால் அடித்து கொல்லப்பட்டார்கள்,கொன்றவர்களும் தமிழர்கள் தான் .பதினெட்டு வயதிற்கு பின்னர் இங்கு இவர்களை கட்டுப்படுத்துவது மிக கஷ்டம் .சட்டத்திலும் இடமுமில்லை .EXTRA ACTIVITIES  என்று போட்டு இறுக்கவேண்டியதுதான் ஒரே வழி .

 

 

போன மாதம் எனது நண்பனின் மகன் கத்தியால் தனது கழுத்தை வெட்டி தற்கொலை செய்தார் ,இரண்டாம் ஆண்டு யோர்க் பல்கலை கழகத்தில் படித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தவர் .பல்கலை கழக வொலிபோல் டிமில் பங்குபற்றி அந்த டீம் கனேடிய பல்கலைகழகங்களுக்கு இடையிலான ஆட்டங்களில் சம்பியனாக வந்தது .இதனால் படிப்பை சிறிது தவறவிட்டார் என்று கேள்விப்பட்டேன் .உண்மையில் என்ன நடந்தது என தெரியாது .தற்கொலை என்றபடியால் மீடியாவில் வரவில்லை .

 

எனக்கும் இரண்டு வாலுகள் இருக்கு ,கட்டுக்குள் வைத்திருப்பது என்பது இலகுவான விடயமல்ல .
