=================

To be delivered to: The United States House of Representatives,

The United States Senate, and President Barack Obama

Petition Background

I volunteered in rehabilitation work (2002 - 2006) teaching and developing an IT school in the war ravaged and Tsunami devastated North and East (Vanni) of my Tamil Homeland in Sri Lanka. While I was able to return to the US to escape the onslaught by the Sri Lankan Government and Military following the breakdown of the Ceasefire, my students, colleagues, friends, and the wonderful, simple, hospitable, and innocent people of the Vanni with whom I lived and worked for 5 of the most exhilarating years of my life in my own mother country, were slaughtered in the most heinous and premeditated crime against humanity of this new century. 40,000 (by UN estimates) and as many as 150,000 (according to ground estimates) were butchered in this least acknowledged and worst crime against humanity of this century.

We, the Tamils in the Worldwide Diaspora and our remaining brothers and sisters in the totally subjugated Tamil Nation in Sri Lanka are calling on the US Congress, Senate, and President Obama to establish an independent international investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators to mete out accountability and justice for the innocent voiceless dead and their equally voiceless and subjugated living survivors and loved ones.

Dear Petitioner,

Thank you so much for your unstinting support in this effort.

The response thus far of 274 signatures is encouraging especially in view of the forthcoming UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva in March of 2013 where we can make a difference.

I firmly believe and have full faith that the supreme and monumental sacrifice in May of 2009 of the simple folk, the men, the women, and the children of the Vanni, is not in vain. Rather, I believe and have faith that they have gone to their horrible deaths in the most unimaginable and cruel manner in their tens of thousands to end once and for all the culture of impunity that is the root cause of all the mayhem that our people have suffered since independence from the British.

I would like all of us, Singhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burghers, and all other ethnicities of the country to see this as a golden opportunity, to achieve accountability and justice for not only the people of the Vanni but also a chance of accountability and justice for all the other atrocities committed since independence. This is not revenge but simply a search for truth, the only means of reconciliation among all the communities of the island. May the sacrifice of the people of the Vanni end once and for all the endemic and ingrained culture of impunity and bring about this transformation of society through Accoutability and Justice for all.

Please continue your effort to reach out to all people and all humanity so that the sacrifice of the people of the Vanni may never be forgotten and will be the means by which humanity will create the mechanisms for the "responsibility to protect" (R2P) the most vulnerable and least protected of humankind.

Thank you.

Kind regards,

Anandaraj L. Ponnambalam

Dear Petitioner,

Thank you again for your support in this initiative.

We seem to have reached a number of around 350 signatures that has not changed much during the last two weeks.

I plan to keep the petition drive for a couple of weeks more and end it on December 15. During these final 2 weeks, please do your best to publicize among non-Tamils and the wider public who are now realizing the magnitude of this, the worst human rights crime and genocide of this new century (far worse than Libya, Syria, and Gaza combined that gets all the international attention). Let us reach for 1000 signatures during this period!

Please distribute it on Facebook, Twitter and other social media links you may have, that will reach the younger folk who are also showing a great deal of awarenes of this crime against all of humanity.

The most recent Charles Petrie UN report that acknowledges the UN role of inaction and actual complicity with the SL government and military in the slaughter has now confirmed that the number of dead is the 146,000 that has always been maintaind by Bishop Rayappu on the ground based on actual government figures that were suppressed. What is now needed is the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

It is only an independent international investigation that will reveal the truth to be followed by accountability and justice for the voiceless dead and their loved ones. Also, this is the only means of stopping the continuing impunity and onslaught against our surviving brothers and sisters in the Tamil Nation in Sri Lanka.

The momentum is building up to a groundswell! Let us all be part of it! Thank you so much.

Dear Petitioner,

As planned I am concluding this petition drive today, December 15, approximately a month from its date of commencement, in order to move on to the next stage of publicizing it in preparation for the forthcoming UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva, in March of 2013.

It is not the number of signatures to this petition (390 in all) that matter, as this was an individual initiative, not affiliated to any organization for any expectation that would generate large numbers.  Neither does it matter whether or not the US Congress/Senate/President Obama would take any action on the petition.   What matters most of all is simply that 390 individuals such as you scattered across the world cared enough to register your commitment to the sanctity of life of the most vulenerable and defenseless of humanity.  You did so by calling for justice and accountability in the worst massacre of innocent people (140,000 and counting) that has blighted the dawn of this new century.

You, the 390 petition signers, gave voice to the voiceless dead and their equally voiceles loved ones.  For this, the Tamil Nation in Sri Lanka, its Diaspora, and all the organizations, and individuals, engaged in this single minded quest for Truth, Accountability, Justice are eternally grateful.  Any semblance of Reconciliation can only be achieved if there is Freedom for our people in a safe and secure Tamil Nation in our own mother country.  The untold suffering and deaths of the people of the Vanni will not then be in vain.

In addition to delivering this petition to the US Congress/Senate, I will be sending this petition to as many relevant human rights and political organizations as possible prior to the forthcoming UN Human Rights Council meeting in March of 2013.

If anyone of you or someone you know can aid me in this effort, please do not hesitate to contact me as I can send you the pettion for you to distribute as well.  The more individual efforts we make to complement the unstinting efforts currently underway by the various Tamil and other human rights organizations, the more we will likely to achieve our objective for the sake of all humanity.

"Little drops of water make a mighty ocean"

Thank you so much

Anandaraj L. Ponnambalam
