Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton, MP: On indulgence, I would like to highlight something that has happened this week. I do not intend to make a political point but I would like to seek indulgence to mention this in the House. On Monday afternoon, a Sri Lankan born paediatric registrar Dr Ruban Arumugam was tragically killed on the Castlereagh Highway near Mudgee in New South Wales . Reuben, as he was known to his colleagues, came to Australia in the early nineties, was educated at the University of New South Wales and has been working in Dubbo, in western New South Wales as a paediatric registrar. He had had a very busy weekend. He was actively involved in saving the life of a child that was born 13 weeks premature. It was particularly difficult because, due to the inclement weather, the aerial retrieval services that normally pro-vide backup could not go to Dubbo. Dr Arumugam had a very torrid time saving that child. Also, on the week-end he dealt with a young child that had been diag-nosed as having leukaemia. After a busy week of shifts at Dubbo Base Hospital he was heading home to his wife who lives in Western Sydney when he was, unfortunately, killed in a car accident. I would like to place on record here my condo-lences to Reubens family, to his colleagues at Dubbo Base HospitalI know they are mourning at the mo-ment and to his mother and father, who at the moment are working through Immigration to try and get temporary visas to be here for his funeral. We are having a few problems with that but I am assured that Senator Evanss office is working very hard to overcome them. In closing, I would like to acknowledge the contri-bution that Dr Arumugam made to the people of western New South Wales . I would like to acknowledge my sadness for his wife and his parents, and his brother who lives, I think, in America . Dubbo doctor dies in crash

The Dubbo medical community is mourning the death of a colleague who saved the lives of two children earlier this week.

Dr Nagaruban Arumugam had worked as a paediatric registrar at Dubbo Base Hospital for the past five months.

After treating a baby born 13-weeks prematurely on Monday morning the paediatrician-in-training started the drive to Sydney, but was killed in a motor vehicle accident near Mudgee.

Tributes flowed yesterday from head of paediatrics Dr Dominic Fitzgerald, colleague Dr Naren Nadanachandran, Greater Western Area Health Service and Parkes MP Mark Coulton.

Dr Arumugam, known as Ruban, was described as someone with “a true calling” for paediatrics because of his personal skills and his death as a “phenomenal waste”.

Dr Nadanachandran met Dr Arumugam last year through work at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and together with Dr Ciah Kim they came to Dubbo this year for the rural component of their training.

“Anyone will tell you Ruban was one of the most kind, generous, selfless people, which explains why he was ideal in paediatric training,” Dr Nadanachandran said.

“He was softly spoken but always confident, modest despite his skill as a doctor.”

Those skills came to the fore when Dr Arumugam was met with the birth of a baby 13 weeks prematurely this week.

He cared for the tiny patient from 3am until later in the morning when the NSW newborn and paediatric Emergency Transport Service arrived from Sydney, delayed because fog had closed the airport.

On the weekend he diagnosed and helped to stabilise a sick 4-year-old, Dr Nadanachandran said.

The unwell child was diagnosed with leukaemia and resulting treatment prevented a potentially fatal complication, he said.

Born in Sri Lanka, Dr Arumugam left his family in the early 1990s to attend Homebush Boys High School, of which he was dux.

During recent trouble in Sri Lanka he made efforts to meet its humanitarian needs, despite his busy life as a registrar.

“He felt a duty to his people at home and here, he was very much an Australian citizen at heart,” Dr Nadanachandran said.

Dr Arumugam was halfway through his training to become a specialist and worked in emergency paediatric, maternity and labour wards, Dr Fitzgerald said.

“He came to Dubbo in January and gave wonderful and exemplary service, he was universally well-liked,” he said.

“The last weekend of his life he saved the lives of two Dubbo residents.”

On behalf of Greater Western, Clinical Operations acting director Michelle Turnbull yesterday expressed their deepest sympathy to the family and friends on the tragic death of Dr Nagaruban Arumugam.

“Dr Arumugam was highly regarded within the paediatric department at Dubbo Base Hospital,” she said.

“He was well known for his excellent clinical skills and his kindness and care to sick children.

“His friendly and happy approach to his work was outstanding.

“The unexpected and tragic loss of Dr Arumugam has been a terrible shock to his friends and colleagues at Dubbo Base Hospital and he will be sadly missed.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Dr Arumugam.”

In Parliament yesterday Parkes MP Mark Coulton informed the house of the tragedy.

“I would like to acknowledge the contribution that Dr Arumugam made to the people of western New South Wales,” he told Parliament.

“I would like to acknowledge my sadness for his wife and his parents.

“His death highlights the dedication and extreme pressure that people who work in health in western New South Wales are under.

“I know he will be sadly missed.”

Dr Arumugam is survived by his wife, to whom he was “dedicated”, his parents and siblings.

The Australian parliament has paid tribute to a Dubbo paediatrician who was killed in a car crash on Monday after a busy weekend on duty.

Dr Nagaruban Arumugam, a Sri Lankan-born paediatric registrar known as Ruban to colleagues, died on Monday afternoon after finishing a series of busy shifts at the Dubbo Base Hospital. He was heading home to his wife in Western Sydney.

Over the weekend, Dr Arumugam saved the life of a baby born 13 weeks premature, made all the more difficult due to inclement weather halting the arrival of backup to Dubbo airport.

He had also helped to stabilise a sick 4-year-old diagnosed with leukaemia, the treatment preventing a potentially fatal complication, reports the Daily Liberal.

Speaking in the House of Representatives, the federal member for Parkes in Western NSW, Mark Coulton, said Dr Arumugam’s death highlighted the pressures doctors face working in rural and remote areas.

“I would like to acknowledge the contribution that Dr Arumugam made to the people of western NSW. I would like to acknowledge my sadness for his wife and his parents, and his brother,” said Mr Coulton in Hansard.

“His death highlights the dedication and the extreme pressure that people who work in health in western New South Wales are under. I know he will be sadly missed.”

வார இறுதி நாட்களில் கடுமையாக பணிபுரிந்து குறைந்த பட்சம் இரண்டு உயிர்களையாவது காப்பாற்றிய பின்னர் இவர் சிட்னி திரும்புவார்.

தனது நண்பர்களாலும் சகபாடிகளாலும் ரூபன் என அழைக்கப்படும் மருத்துவர் ஆறுமுகம், 90-களின் தொடக்கத்தில் அவுஸ்திரேலியாவுக்கு சென்றவர். நியூ சவுத் வேல்ஸ் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் பட்டதாரியான இவர், சிறுவர்களுக்கான மருத்துவத்தில் மிகவும் புகழ் பெற்றிருந்தார்.

வடக்கு சிட்னியில் நாளை திங்கட்கிழமை நடைபெறவிருக்கும் இவரது இறுதி நிகழ்வுகளில் அவரை நேசித்த பெரும் தொகையானவர்கள் கலந்துகொள்வார்கள் என எதிர்பார்க்கப்படுகின்றது.

JUST hours after Dr Nagaruban "Ruban" Arumugam worked through the night to save a premature baby's life, his own tragically was cut short.

The young paediatrician, who had been working gruelling shifts at Dubbo Hospital, died when his car ran off the road during the five-hour drive back to his wife Akalya.

Just days away from finishing his rural secondment, Dr Arumugam was due to resume working at the Children's Hospital, at Westmead, closer to his western Sydney home.

The tragic death of the 32-year-old has highlighted the long hours and strenuous working conditions endured by junior doctors.

Junior doctors report working an average 50 or more hours a week.

An Australian Medical Association survey last year found almost 300 young doctors said they worked "unsafe hours."

Friends and family of Sri Lankan-born Dr Arumugam said the week before his death was busy.

Days before the fatal car accident on the Castlereagh Highway, Mudgee, he had diagnosed and helped a seriously ill toddler who had leukaemia.

Speaking at his funeral, colleague Dr Narendran Nadanachandran described his friend as "a kind and gentle character."

"He had a beautiful smile and always greeted people with a smile," Dr Nadanachandran said. "He was extremely busy at Dubbo Hospital but despite the business and stress of the jobs, he was always a kind and humane person to his colleagues and his patients."

His death was raised in Federal Parliament last week by Parkes MP Mark Coulton, who said the death highlighted the "extreme pressure" under which doctors work.

The Rural Doctors Association has blamed the Government for not offering incentives to doctors to stay in the bush.

Yesterday the family of the baby boy that Dr Arumugam had saved praised him for saving their son Jude's life, after he was born 13 weeks prematurely.

Born at 3am, it was not until seven hours later that the NSW newborn and paediatric Emergency Transport Service arrived from Sydney, having been delayed because of wet weather.

Doctor who gave too much

WE ALL complain about medical costs but there are also costs paid by the medical community. Sometimes those costs are tragically steep.

The long hours worked by many doctors and medical staff take their toll on family and social life. Sadly, this will likely always be the case given the arduous and unpredictable nature of medical work.

Yet there must be some means of better looking after medical staff lest they follow the path of young Sydney paediatrician Dr Nagaruban "Ruban" Arumugam.

The popular doctor was a genuine life saver, yet lost his own life due to the enormous hours he worked. It's not just the hours, of course. The sheer intensity of medical work, when any error might result in fatality, is exhausting even for the fittest and most alert surgeon.

Dr Arumugam had worked a double shift at Dubbo Hospital prior to embarking on a five-hour drive home. It is highly likely that the doctor simply fell asleep at the wheel, worn down by his labour.

For his family, this is a tragedy beyond imagination. For the patients saved by Dr Arumugam, it will be a painful loss.

And for the patients yet to be saved, they will miss the care and attention of a young man working his way up - but sadly working too hard and too long.

Staff of Dubbo Base Hospital continue to prepare a memorial service that will be a fitting tribute to the talented and caring Dr Nagaruban “Ruban” Arumugam.

Sri Lankan-born Dr Arumugam’s death in a car accident aged just 32 years has sent waves of grief across the world.

A week after the paediatric registrar’s death, relatives, friends and colleagues said farewell at an “emotional” funeral service held in Sydney on Monday.

Dr Arumugam was on a six-month rural secondment to Dubbo when the car accident occurred.

Members of the Dubbo medical community made the trip to Sydney to join more than 300 people in saying goodbye.

Dr Naren Nadanachandran, a colleague of Dr Arumugam’s from the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Dubbo base, said it was a “heartfelt and appropriate send-off”.

Dr Nadanachandran, colleague Dr Siah Kim, the chief resident medical officer of Westmead children’s hospital, family members, friends from university and high school and a representative of the Sri Lankan Tamil people all shared their thoughts on ‘Ruban’ at the funeral.

“There were a lot of common things spoken of in the various circles - the Ruban we knew in Dubbo was the same Ruban known by others,” Dr Nadanachandran said.

“His smile, he was a gentle person who put other people ahead of himself and did not take credit for the good things he did.

“There were many mentions of his devotion to his wife Akalya and his family in Sri Lanka and throughout the world.”

Dr Nadanachandran said Dr Arumugam’s death was more than a loss for his family and friends.

“It is very tragic such a fine doctor was taken away prematurely, the broader medical community and the Australian community will miss out on not having Ruban here,” he said.

Dr Arumugam’s death has been reported on by Columbo newspaper The Sunday Times and on the Tamil Sydney website.

A former childhood friend now living in the United States also contacted the Daily Liberal after last week’s report on his death.

Dr Arumugam was skilled not only in treating children but alleviating the fears of their parents, Dr Nadanachandran said and this was true in Dr Arumugam’s last case.

The paediatric registrar worked on a 13-weeks premature baby on the same day ah he died.

The baby’s family praised Dr Arumugam for saving their son’s life.

“It was a great tragedy to lose someone who wanted to save children,” the baby’s mother told the Daily Telegraph.

Tributes flow for Australian Tamil doctor killed in car crash

Hundreds of Australians have paid tribute to Dr Nagaruban “Ruban” Armugam, a Tamil paediatrician tragically killed last week in a tragic road accident in Australia on 22 June. The 32-year-old Paediatrician was commemorated Monday at a moving funeral as tributes from politicians, colleagues, former patients and members of the community marked a week of mourning.

Armugan, described in the Daily Telegraph as a “genuine life saver”, was killed whilst returning from a gruelling weekend shift where he had saved the life of a child at Dubbo Base Hospital, 5 hours away from his home in Sydney.

Politicians from all sides of Australian politics expressed their condolences, with National MP Mark Coulton highlighting the contribution that Dr Arumugam had made to the people of western New South Wales in parliament days after his death.

“I would like to acknowledge my sadness for his wife (…) parents, and his brother” Coulton added, describing in detail Ruban's efforts in saving a premature baby and diagnosing a child with leukaemia only hours before his car veered off the road in the rural town of Mudgee.

Doctor Rubans death has ignited national debate over the long hours faced by medical practitioners, with Parliamentary Secretary for Health Mark Butler saying the tragedy highlighted the long hours, intense travel and dangers doctors faced in “helping others maintain their health and well being”.

“He was extremely busy at Dubbo Hospital but despite the business and stress of the jobs, he was always a kind and humane person to his colleagues and his patients”, said colleague Dr Nadanachandran at the funeral, sentiments echoed by dozens of former patients who called up the hospital and voiced their despair after hearing the news.

A champion for the rights of Tamils in Sri Lanka's North East, Ruban was described as an “inspirational figure” by the members of the youth Diaspora, who have labelled him a "role model of dedication and humanity".

Arriving from Sri Lanka in the early nineties, Arumugam graduated from the University of New South Wales in 2002, before completing his Paediatric residence at Westmead Children’s Hospital in 2008. Ruban was on the last week of his secondment at Dubbo, and was known for his exceptional skills, compassion and modesty.

“Dear Ruban, may you touch the babies’ souls in heaven as you did on earth.”

Dubbo clinicians and hospital staff and the wider community yesterday gathered to remember paediatric registrar Nagaruban Arumugam who died in a car accident on June 22.

Dr Arumugam’s grieving widow, parents, sister, parents-in-law and other relations and friends travelled to join the esteemed doctor’s Dubbo friends for the tribute.

The memorial service was fittingly held in the garden of the Dubbo Base Hospital children’s ward.

Dr Arumugam’s colleagues and friends, Dr Naren Nadanachandran and Dr Siah Kim, presided over the service, with an arrangement of white flowers and a photo of the doctor on display nearby.

Praise for Dr Arumugam flowed as freely as the tears.

Paediatric nurse Jodie said she remembered the first day in January “Ruban” walked into the ward with his big smile.

He had a happy “hey” for everyone, she said.

“He graciously put up with our teasing and we found he had a great sense of humour,” she said.

Special-care nursery nurse Tracey came close to tears and was comforted by nurse Emma as she told the gathering about their “guiding light”.

“Ruban’s excellent clinical skills were not overshadowed by his outstanding personality,” she said.

Maternity staff had the chance to write a message and one staff member wrote a poem, which were read during the service.

“Dear Ruban, may you touch the babies’ souls in heaven as you did on earth,” one message said.

Head of paediatrics Dr Dominic Fitzgerald thanked Ruban’s widow Akalya for sharing her husband with them.

“Ruban always gave us his best and was determined we’d have it,” he said.

Staff hugged and talked to each other in comfort at the end of the service and people lined up to write a message in a book for Dr Arumugam’s family to take with them.

Dr Nadanachandran said his friend’s photograph would be placed on the wall of the paediatric department and a tree would be planted in memory of Dr Arumugam in the garden.
