பல்லாயிரம் மைல்கள் தொலைவிலிலுள்ள வடக்கு - மேற்கு ஆபிரிக்காவிலுள்ள சஹாரா பலைவனத்திலிருந்து பலத்த காற்றினால் அடித்துச் செல்லப்படும் மணல் தூசுகள் பிரித்தானியாவில் படிக்கின்றன.

 

சஹாரா பாலைவனத்தில் கடந்த வார இறுதியிலிருந்து கடுமையான காற்று வீசுகின்றது. இதனால் சுமார் 3,220 கிலோ மீற்றர்கள் தொலைவிலுள்ள பிரித்தானியாவின் ஹேர்ட்ஸ் மற்றும் எஸெக்ஸ் நகரங்களில் படிகின்றன.

நேற்றும் நேற்று முன்தினமும் அதிகளவான மணல் தூசுகள் சிறிய படையாக கார் மற்றும் ஜன்னல்களில் படிந்து காணப்பட்டதாக தெரிவிக்கப்படுகின்றது. இது குறித்து அவதானமாக செயற்படுமாறும் மணல் சூறாவளி ஆடைகளுடன் தாயாராக இருக்குமாறும் நெரிசல்நேர சாரதிகள், பாடசாலை சிறுவர்களின் பெற்றோர்களுக்கு ஹேர்ட்போர்ட்ஷயர் மற்றும் எஸெக்ஸ் நகர சபைகள் தெரிவித்துள்ளன.

High levels of pollution could trigger health problems that remain weeks after the Saharan dust has settled, medical experts warned.

Asthmatics, people with chronic lung conditions and cystic fibrosis sufferers could have their conditions worsened by the pollution crisis, doctors said. Around two thirds of the 3.6 million people with asthma find that air pollution makes their asthma worse.

People with asthma were told they might need to use their blue reliever inhalers more often as they could be prone to attacks over the next few days. Other people with lung and heart problems, and those who are older, should also avoid strenuous exercise or activity.

Across most of England, moderate to high air pollution levels were being recorded, with level 10 - "very high" - found in parts of East Anglia and the East Midlands.

High levels of pollution are forecast for East Anglia, the Midlands, Lincolnshire, eastern parts of Wales, through the Wirral and the north coast of Wales. High levels will move north over much of coastal north-west England, to south-west Scotland and the north-east of Northern Ireland.

ஐரோப்பாவுக்கு வரும் தூரத்தில், காற்றில் உள்ள ஈரலிப்பு தன்மையில்... தூசி, பாரம் அதிகரித்து இடையிலேயே... பயணம் தடைப்படக் கூடிய சாத்தியங்கள். அதிகம்.

 

இப்போது... ஐரோப்பாவில் வசந்த காலம் ஆரம்பித்துள்ளதால்... பெரும்பாலான‌ மரங்கள் பூக்க ஆரம்பித்துள்ளன. அதிலுள்ள மகரந்தங்கள் காற்றில் பெருவாரியாக பற‌க்கும். ஒவ்வொரு வருடமும்... இதே மாதங்களில் இங்கும் நிகழ்வது.  அந்த மகரந்தங்கள் தான்... இவை என எண்ணுகின்றேன்.

இந்த மகரந்த தூசி, பலருக்கு ஒவ்வாமை(அலர்ஜி), வருத்தத்ததை உண்டாக்குபவை.

சகாரா புழுதியில் குளித்தது மகிழ்ச்சி என்றாலும்.. கண்களில் ஒருவித எரிவு. இந்த தூசித் துகள்களோடு என்னென்ன நோய்க்கிருமிகளும் கூட வருகுதோ.. எனித்தான் இருக்குது.. பின் விளைவுகள்..???!

By UK standards, air pollution levels are high. The Department of the Environment measures outdoor air pollution on a one-to-10 scale. Parts of north-west Norfolk hit level 10 on Tuesday.

 

On Wednesday, levels were recorded at seven - meaning high - in towns and cities in East Anglia and rural parts of south-east England. Pollution levels of five were reached in London, the Midlands and Yorkshire and Humberside.

The Met Office's specialist forecaster says conditions will worsen later in the week, as a south-easterly wind brings more pollution from Europe.

 

What has caused it?

 

The tipping point seems to have been dust from storms in the Sahara. Normally it settles in the countries of southern Europe - Spain, Malta and Greece, for example.

However, winds from the south and east have brought the dust to the UK, along with industrial pollution from Europe. And because those weather conditions are stable and not changing, those particles are not being dispersed.

But that is only part of the problem. Most air pollution in the UK comes from road transport and residential emissions.

Britain was left gasping for breath yesterday as a grey cloud of smog descended over much of the country.

People were warned not to exercise outdoors and schools kept pupils inside as a mix of dust from the Sahara, toxic particles from the continent and fumes from cars and factories filled the skies.

Asthmatics complained of sore chests and breathlessness, while commuters donned face masks to avoid breathing in the particles. The elderly and millions with health problems were advised to take special care as doctors warned that symptoms may last for several days.

Those with lung and heart conditions were told to avoid strenuous activity while others with sore eyes, coughs and sore throats were advised to reduce the amount of time they spend outside. One expert said it would be 'sheer stupidity' to go running in the conditions.

Pollution hit the maximum level of ten – very high – in East Anglia, but cities as far apart as Brighton, Birmingham and Newcastle also suffered. The smog, which has built up as a result of several days of light south-easterly winds, is expected to persist today over East Anglia, the Midlands, Lincolnshire, Wales and Wirral. 

It will begin to disperse this evening as winds pick up, and tomorrow a band of rain will clear it away. But Dr Keith Prowse, honorary medical adviser to the British Lung Foundation, said symptoms brought on by the smog could last several days.

'The people who are most vulnerable are people with chest diseases and heart disease, the very young and very old because their immune systems cannot cope as well,' he said. 'I have seen people actually jogging while holding an asthma reliever. They are asking for trouble at the moment.'

Frank Kelly, professor of environmental health at King's College London, said each breath of the smog will cause immediate problems for some, such as those with asthma, and 'contribute to longer term problems for most of us in the form of heart disease and stroke'.

Professor Kelly, who is also chairman of the Department of Health's committee on air pollution, said schools had been right to keep pupils inside at break times to stop them suffering potentially lifelong lung damage.
