இன்று நடைபெற்ற சிறிலங்கா இந்தியா துடுப்பாட்டப் போட்டியில் சிறிலங்கா அணி வெற்றி பெற்றுள்ளது. இப்போட்டியில் தமிழர்கள் தமிழீழம் பொறிக்கப்பட்ட ஆடை அணிந்து கலந்து கொண்டார்கள்.

ஆனால் கிறிக் இன்போ இணையத்தளத்தில் இவ்வாறு இதனை குறிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

Lankans celebrate but no party for fans

Cricket Australia censors have worked overtime of late by banning Andrew Symonds' weekend newspaper column and yesterday roused themselves to remove political signs from Tamil sympathisers at the game at Manuka Oval.

The 200 fans arrived wearing red "Voice of Tamils" T-shirts bearing the slogan "Where is the Humanity", and set up a party outside the gates with drummers, dancers and whistles before play.

Ground officials, claiming to be acting on behalf of Cricket Australia, would not let in two members of the group. The group was also advised not to fly Tamil flags.

Student Vekram Sambasivam said the Tamil sympathisers had come from Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, although they weren't necessarily supporting their home country.

"How can I when they do what they do to my people?" Sambasivam said.

"We came here to get some attention for our cause, but the guards explained that it was Cricket Australia's policy not to politicise the game with banners."

Tamil supporters join in the voice

There were Indians in blue in the crowd, Sri Lankans in a darker shade of the same colour and the odd ones wearing the shirts of Australia and even Pakistan or West Indies. A group of fans sporting red also drew attention and this had to do with something that was truly beyond the boundary.

They were Tamils of Sri Lankan origin and settled in Australia, mostly from Sydney. Their jersey read 'Voice of Tamils, where is humanity?' They were supporting Sri Lanka and still trying to make a point for the "poor condition of Tamils" in the emerald island.

There was nothing untoward with what they were doing and they probably formed the liveliest section of the crowd. "It's more of a campaign than a protest," said Adrian Francis, a citizen of Australia who by birth is a Tamil from Sri Lanka.

"We are doing this because we believe that Tamils in Sri Lanka are discriminated against and poorly treated. They are subjected to injustice in every possible walk of life and this has to change.

" Francis, who said his parents were victims of this injustice, claimed this was the first public exhibition of their disgruntlement. "We don't want to resort to hostilities.

This is a peaceful way to draw attention. We chose to turn up for this cricket match because we felt this will help us draw attention.

" He insisted that despite the complaints, the group he belongs to supports Sri Lanka. "We are not against the country.

We are very happy to see Muttiah Muralitharan representing Sri Lanka and doing so well. We connect with him and are here to cheer for Sri Lanka apart from making our point.

" According to Francis and a few of his fellow red shirts, this campaign will be seen in other places of Australia on course of this tri-series in future. "Definitely in Sydney and Melbourne, where we have a sizeable presence.

You can see how serious we are about this, we came all the way from Sydney," said someone identifying himself as Jayan. It's difficult to speculate how far reaching their effort will be or whether they have chosen the right platform to voice their displeasure.

But if drawing attention was their main objective, they did succeed in that endeavour. Not clear how enjoyable it was for the Sri Lankan team, they enjoyed the support nonetheless, as did many others.

Australian Tamil Youth raise their voice for the suffering Tamils of Sri Lanka

Australian Tamil youth from Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne gathered on the 12th of February at the Manuka oval in Canberra, the venue for the one day encounter between Sri Lanka and India, part of the on going triangular series between Australia, Sri Lanka and India. Hundred and sixty youth from Sydney drove 350 km to join the local youth from Canberra and few who travelled from Melbourne.

These youth first gathered outside the ground sporting bright red T-shirts, with an Eelam map and “Voice of Tamils” written across the map and “Where is humanity?” written at the bottom of the map waving red flags carrying the same slogans. Because it was raining, and the fate of the match was not certain at that stage, the gates did not open on time. Therefore they started to have a party outside beating the drums they have taken with them and dancing. When the gates were finally opened, although they were holding tickets for the game they had to negotiate their way in, as the Cricket Australia’s policy is not to politicise the game with banners, after they were advised not to fly Tamil flags.

Once they were in, they secured a vantage point next to the score board to seek maximum attention of the spectators. Throughout the game, they were dancing and waving the flags as any other Sri Lankan supporters were doing. As a result more Sri Lankan supporters both Tamils and Singhalese joined them to enjoy the day. This attracted the media attention a lot. On and off on the radio and television the commentators were talking about the “Tamil supporters” describing what they were wearing and the flag they were waving.

Many print media interviewed members of this group and carried news items the next day. Yahoo.com described them as; “They were Tamils of Sri Lankan origin and settled in Australia, mostly from Sydney. Their jersey read 'Voice of Tamils, where is humanity?'
